The Division of
Media, Communication and Performing Arts (MCPA)
is seeking to appoint a Head of Division to lead and develop a large and diverse academic team. The Head of Division (HoD) will provide overall operational leadership to MCPA, managing and coordinating all aspects of the implementation of the School operational plan in relation to the Division. They will also contribute to the teaching and learning activities of the Division and undertake research, scholarship, or knowledge exchange activities as appropriate. The Head of Division should identify with the ethos and values of the School and have a creative and collaborative approach to strengthening and operationalising these with the team.
The Division of Media, Communication and Performing Arts offers a suite of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in areas such as Drama, Film and Media, Costume Design, Digital Marketing and Public Relations, and Arts Management. The division plans to launch a new programme in Digital and Graphic Design in 2026. Each year, there are in the region of 750 students being taught by a team of diverse academic staff. The Division also has several collaborative partnerships in Scotland, England and Greece. Staff within the Division submitted to REF, with a strong focus on applied research with real-world impact, and the HoD would be expected to collaborate with the Research Centre Directors in the School to build on the outcome of this submission.
Applicants must be collaborative, inclusive leaders with strong communication and team-building skills. They should be able to demonstrate the ability to plan and manage teaching, staffing, and budgets for a large and diverse team. In addition, the role holder will have previous experience of teaching and research/scholarship in a relevant discipline, and a solid knowledge and understanding of quality enhancement procedures and their application to collaborative partnerships. Active participation in and experience of working across School and institutional committees is required as the post holder will be required to engage with both the School/Divisional committees and those of our external partnerships. While applicants need not be active researchers themselves, they should have a good knowledge and understanding of the REF process and be able to support and develop a positive research culture within the Division.
The post holder will be an effective and motivational communicator and will have the ability to gain the commitment of others within the Division to work towards collective aims that will deliver growth alongside staff and student satisfaction. The appointee will also be a strong coach who is able to provide supportive guidance to academic staff at a range of career stages. Able to take difficult decisions, they will have the knowledge, passion, and drive to enhance and develop current and new systems and practices in a manner that enhances the student and staff experience while building on our reputation for innovative teaching and learning that supports civic society and social justice.
