Job Description

Queen Elizabeth's School is a rapidly-improving large Upper School, set in beautiful Dorset countryside. We are looking to appoint a passionate and inspiring Head of Mathematics to join our team at this exciting time.

Actual Salary 32,916 - 51,048 per annum (M1 to UP3).

In addition a TLR 1.2, 12,521 per annum is offered for the Head of Mathematics role

This job is full time and offered on a permanent basis.

Approximate start date 1 January 2026

We are looking for a candidate with expert knowledge of the curriculum at both KS4 and KS5, and a clear understanding of teaching for mastery in Maths. You will provide impactful leadership in order to embed recent developments, and deliver a sustained and ambitious improvement in student outcomes.

You will be passionate about teaching for mastery, have an awareness of the 'five big ideas' from the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM).

You will also have experience of developing and inspiring colleagues across a department to plan lessons and develop pedagogy in a mastery-based approach. In addition, you will ideally have a track-record of successfully leading change and improving outcomes across a department in your current role. This could be as a Second-in-Department or as Head of Department. What we are looking for is someone who has the enthusiasm to inspire and motivate, alongside the tenacity to implement improvements in every classroom across a large department.

We have an enthusiastic, friendly and willing team of teachers, from trainees, ECTs and experienced subject specialists who all share a commitment to continuous professional development. Our aim is to inspire a love of, and success in, mathematics for their students and come together every lunchtime in the maths office to socialise.

Team meetings are focussed on CPD and we work closely with the NCETM to develop our practice. Your role will be supported by the Director of Maths, who works across our Initio middle, secondary and upper schools, and as such this role offers a unique opportunity to work within your own department while also being supported by a wide network of colleagues all equally passionate about maths.

You will have great working knowledge of Rosenshine's principles of instruction and have experience supporting colleagues to implement principles from Tom Sherrington's 'Walkthru' series or Doug Lemov's 'Teach Like a Champion'.

This is an incredibly exciting time to join us at Queen Elizabeth's school. If you are ready to lead by example, foster a culture of continuous improvement, and inspire both students and colleagues, we would love to hear from you.

Interviews will take place on Friday 24 October
