The Chair and Governors of West Buckland School invite applications for the role of Head of Prep from September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.


West Buckland School comprises a Nursery, Prep School and Senior School. The three Schools share a beautiful site in the idyllic location of North Devon, close to the town of Barnstaple. The Prep and Senior Schools are situated in separate buildings and share access to all the School's excellent facilities. There is accommodation on site for the Head of Prep.


The Governors are seeking to appoint a leader who is a specialist in Prep education. The successful candidate will possess exceptional creativity and vision. They will also demonstrate excellent communication skills with all members of the community. A genuine passion for Prep education and an understanding of the significant impact an exceptional early education has on children's lives are key for the role. This is a time of growth and change for the School; a strategic vision, innovative thinking and the ability to work collaboratively with the Head of the Senior School will ensure West Buckland Prep's next exciting phase. The Head of Prep reports directly to the Head.


The Prep prides itself on its holistic education and the dedicated pastoral care of its pupils; small class sizes ensure that the skills and talents of every pupil, alongside their academic abilities, are valued.


The successful candidate will likely be an experienced Deputy Head or a Head of Prep in a through school. Key requirements of the successful candidate are a demonstrable understanding of current challenges in the independent schools sector, and an understanding of how a Prep school works within a through school structure.
