Role Overview
As Head of Production, you will oversee all production operations to ensure we deliver excellence in every job. You will be responsible for managing workflows, coordinating teams, maintaining quality standards, and ensuring on-time and on-budget delivery. This senior leadership role requires strong organisational, communication, HR, and quality control skills. You will work closely with Sales, Client Services, and Production to optimise performance and drive continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Production Leadership & Operations
Plan, oversee, and manage the end-to-end production workflow across digital printing, finishing, dispatch, and any other relevant departments.
Allocate resources (people, equipment, materials) efficiently to meet job deadlines and maximise utilisation.
Maintain and monitor production schedules; ensure jobs are completed on time and to specification.
Quality Control & Assurance
Define, enforce, and review quality standards for all products and processes.
Implement checks, inspections, and controls to catch defects and ensure consistency.
Lead corrective actions when standards are not met and manage root cause analyses.
HR & Team Management
Lead, build, and mentor the production team, including hiring, training, performance evaluations, and development plans.
Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and high performance.
Handle staffing plans, timesheets, and holiday schedules, and ensure cross-training where needed.
Communication & Stakeholder Management
Act as the interface between production and other departments (Sales, Client Services, Design, etc.) to ensure priorities, timelines, and expectations are clear.
Regularly report on key metrics (production output, quality issues, capacity, downtime, budget) to senior management.
Manage relationships with suppliers and external partners, ensuring materials and services meet company standards.
Process Improvement & Organisation
Identify bottlenecks, inefficiencies or waste in production processes and lead improvement initiatives.
Implement systems and controls to improve workflow, reduce costs, and enhance productivity.
Ensure compliance with health & safety standards, ISO or other industry / regulatory requirements as relevant.
Budget & Cost Control
Monitor production budgets, costs of materials, labour, maintenance, and downtime.
Make recommendations for investments in equipment or process improvements when needed.
Work to ensure production costs align with revenue and profit goals.
Ideal Candidate
Proven experience in a leadership role overseeing production or operations. Experience in the print industry is
preferable
but not mandatory.
Excellent organisational skills: ability to manage multiple projects, shifting priorities, and deadlines without losing detail.
Strong communication: both with internal teams and external stakeholders; must be able to present clearly and confidently.
HR skills: hiring, training, developing team members; managing performance; fostering a positive and motivated working environment.
Quality control expertise: setting, maintaining, and enforcing quality standards; handling defects; attention to detail.
Analytical mindset: able to gather data, understand metrics, spot problems, and drive solutions.
Proactive problem-solver: anticipates issues (capacity, scheduling, resource constraints) and takes action.
Budget-aware and commercially minded: understanding cost vs benefit; able to make decisions that balance quality, speed, and profitability.
Leadership & people management: able to motivate, delegate, build trust, and manage conflict.
Comfortable using digital systems/software for scheduling, job tracking, production monitoring, as well as standard office tools.
Flexible & resilient: able to work in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments; good under pressure.
