Proposition is a charity using art to communicate about the enormous potential human beings have to support greater biodiversity and create ecological resilience. We support emerging artists and run a continuous programme of free public events.

We are a small dynamic and growing team with a variety of exciting projects. Our Bethnal Green art centre houses 140 artists and includes 3 galleries, a 450 capacity performance venue, a cinema room seating 60 and a Physical Arts block hosting classes of aerial, gymnastics, dance, martial arts, and boxing while having saunas and ice baths. We are taking on a new site in Poplar and hiring for our Studio Management Team.

THE ROLE



The Head of Studios leads the studio management team for the smooth and professional management of Proposition's artist studios. This role owns the management of the studios on a day-to-day basis, ensuring they are fully occupied, well organised and the studio artists are looked after, supporting their involvement in the community, are engaged with our spaces and have the opportunities of participating in our programme. The role also provides support to the Programme team, project managing and providing curatorial support for the exhibitions and programme.

RESPONSIBILITIES



Owning the day-to-day management of the studios and liaising with artists about their occupation.

Ownership of occupancy levels across all of the artist studios. Leading the recruitment of studio artists; advertising of studios, hosting viewings and sharing information about the studios. Acting as first point of call for studio artists supporting them with practical matters and ensuring that they are able to make the most of having a studio at Proposition

Writing and distributing contracts ensuring that artists are signed up and relevant fees paid.

Creating a monthly financial report and providing up to date financial details as required by senior management.

Chasing late and outstanding payments, ensuring that artists are on time to pay the license fees and any arrears are resolved swiftly.

Working closely with the wider team writing and distributing a weekly update relevant for artists in the studios.

Ensuring artists are using the studio spaces responsibly and safely in accordance with Health and Safety requirements and Fire Safety rules. Managing and maintaining a database of artists, obtaining artists profiles for the website and socials working with the Communications team.

Managing complaints from artists and ensuring they are resolved to the satisfaction of the artists.

Together with the wider Studio team proactively build the community around and with the artists occupying the studios eg. organising and participating in Artist Socials and other events.

Supporting the Events and Studio team with the organisation and delivery of Open Studios and other studio-based events as relevant.

Providing curatorial support and project managing Proposition's exhibitions, providing support to the Head of Programme during installs and de-installs, team meetings, and in working with the exhibiting artists.

SPECIFICATIONS



Experience and Knowledge



Experience working within an arts, cultural, or charitable organisation.

Experience coordinating membership schemes, alumni networks, or community engagement programmes.

Familiarity with facilities or property management processes (e.g., maintenance requests, communal spaces).

Experience supporting events, workshops, or curatorial programmes.

Ability to use social media to promote artists and activities.

Experience with conflict resolution or mediation.

Familiarity with databases, CRMs, or direct debit/payment platforms.

Skills and Abilities



Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Strong interpersonal skills; able to build positive relationships and manage sensitive issues with diplomacy.

Relaxed working to deadlines and in response to artists' needs

Comfortable and organised working with a very varied workstream

Confident using IT systems (Microsoft Office/Google Workspace, CRM or databases, and ideally Direct Debit/payment platforms).

Ability to problem-solve and take initiative when unexpected issues arise.

High attention to detail, particularly when managing agreements, payments, or scheduling.

An ability to contribute to curatorial development

THE TERMS



Contract:

Permanent

Salary:

35,000 per annum

Hours:

Full-time (9.30am-5.30pm), including occasional weekend and evening working. Proposition has a policy of no paid overtime but offers time-off in-lieu.

Probation period:

6 months

Notice period:

2 months (probation notice period is 2 weeks)
