The head veterinary nurse holds a position of responsibility in the practice which cannot be underestimated. In addition to carrying out normal veterinary nursing duties, the responsibilities will be wide ranging but will mainly involve organising and supervising the veterinary nursing team to ensure the efficient running of the practice.
Responsibilities
Assist veterinarians during examinations, surgeries, and other medical procedures.
Prepare and maintain surgical instruments and equipment, ensuring they are sterile and ready for use.
Monitor the health and behaviour of animals pre- and post-surgery, providing appropriate care as needed.
Administer medications, vaccinations, and treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian.
Conduct laboratory tests such as blood work and urinalysis, ensuring accurate results are recorded.
Maintain accurate patient records and documentation in compliance with veterinary standards.
Educate pet owners on animal care, nutrition, and preventive health measures.
Ensure the cleanliness and organisation of the clinic environment to promote a safe space for both animals and staff.
Set standards in terms of professional conduct
Assist other heads of departments in the running of the practice
Organise the Nurse/VCA rota and implement on the practice PMS system
Organise the day to day duties in kennels, theatre and consults
Acting as the contact for triaging in the absence of the veterinary surgeon in the event of a difficult case beyond the capabilities of the reception team
Ensuring the cleanliness and tidiness of the practice
Responsible for any training with your department
Acting as a liaison between your team and other departments
Attending and holding staff meetings, performance reviews, one-2-one meetings, absence reviews, return to works within your department
Organising CPD or lunch and learns for the team
With help from the Head Veterinary Surgeon, Practice Manager, Clinical lead and Directors make sure that the Risk Assessments, SOP's and policies are kept up to date, signed and adhered to
Set and maintain an approved list of medication to be kept in the practice
Be responsible for keeping the Drug and consumable orders within the budget set by the Directors
Be responsible for the accurate tracking and reporting of the Nursing/VCA team statistics
Skills
Strong knowledge of veterinary nursing practices and procedures.
Proficiency in laboratory techniques relevant to veterinary medicine.
Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with pet owners and team members.
Ability to work efficiently under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
