Vacancies have arisen within site services for health physics surveyors to monitor the workplace and equipment, including transit items, to determine the levels of radiation and contamination present, and allow for the authorised movement of items. The job holder will carry out delegated responsibilities through the health physics service as detailed below:
Undertake surveys and report the results of radiological monitoring to Dounreay management in a timely manner using defined reporting procedures ensuring compliance with IRR17 regulation 20: monitoring of designated areas
Report on identified problems and incidents and provide support and advice, within the boundaries of the role, to establishing causes, identifying, recommending, and implementing solutions
Assess the effectiveness of health physics procedures and provide required amendments and changes
Responsible for radiological monitoring and issuing of clearance certificates ensuring completion of reports
Responsible for selection of the correct radiological instrument considering radiation type and the environment
Utilise diagnostic techniques to identify any operational faults with radiological protection equipment
Control and issue dosimetry for entry into high radiation areas
Undertake the changing of air sample and duct sample filter papers and undertake counting of the filters to determine the activity present
Prepare and operate in alpha or beta-gamma radiation/contaminated controlled work areas
Mentor trainee development
Be required to undertake shift working as operational needs demand
Be part of the on-call emergency response team including local response to NRS/Vulcan NRTE and nationally as part of the RADSAFE arrangements
Perform the responsibilities of local and management appointments relevant to the post including authorised source user
Aptitudes and experience:
City and Guilds in Radiation Safety Practice Level 1 or NVQ Level 2 in Radiation Safety or recognised equivalent qualification
Relevant health physics monitoring experience
Post specific physical capability analysis
