Job Description

We are looking for an assistant Audiologist to join our Adult audiology department at Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board.



The successful candidate will have excellent inter-personal and communication skills, be positive and motivated, will show initiative and take a forward-thinking approach to achieving goals, and working within a multi-disciplinary team. This post involves the provision of daily hearing aid repair services, often in very busy clinics. You will be trained to service and repair hearing aids, as well as provide counselling on use of hearing aids, assistive listening devices and communication tactics. You will assist with stock control, ordering, and general administrative duties.



The postholder will be based at Princess of Wales, Bridgend but will be expected to travel regularly across sites to deliver services, as needed.



This is a full-time role, Monday-Friday. This role could form a job share, so we would encourage those who want part time hours to apply. Exact working hours to be agreed on successful application.



To interact and communicate effectively with patients and members of the public of all ages that have varying degrees of hearing or sensory impairment, be terminally ill or have learning or mental health difficulties. This will always require consideration and awareness of their specific needs and will require significant emotional effort.



To carry out a range of clerical tasks on a day-to-day basis. This will include sending appointment letters, adding data and updating patients' records to patient record systems.



To autonomously and actively participate in the hearing aid repair service. This will include performing electroacoustic and listening checks on hearing aids, rectifying faults with hearing aids and taking ear moulds impressions of adult and appropriate paediatric patients.



The post holder will use otoscopy to identify contraindications to safe impression taking. Using specific analytical and judgemental skills, the post holder will determine the most appropriate audiological management pathway.



Welsh Skills Desirable:

This post is advertised as Welsh Desirable at Level 3 Speaking/Listening (or 'B1' Level if you've learnt Welsh as an adult). This doesn't mean you have to be fluent or able to write long reports in Welsh; it just means being able to hold simple conversations with patients. The post holder will utilise specific clinical knowledge and analytical skills to undertake routine assessments to diagnose faults on hearing aids through subjective listening or objective recording and provide action i.e. replacement of faulty hearing aid.



IT skills will be required to provide replacements for the complete range of NHS hearing aids and instruments.



Carry out domiciliary visits to housebound patients and visit patients on hospital wards to carry out basic hearing aid maintenance and servicing, adjustment or Ear Mould impressions.



Provide replacement batteries to the full range of NHS hearing aids and hearing instruments issued from the department.



The post holder is responsible to ensure appropriate infection control is maintained within the department to local and UHB protocol. This may include using appropriate PPE for patient and personal protection.



The post holder is required through acquired knowledge and experience, to provide patients with relevant and appropriate information and instruction on how to use the prescribed hearing aid or hearing instrument to their best advantage. The post holder will also be required to provide information on general maintenance of hearing aids.



Utilising specific clinical, judgement and communication skills, the post holder will autonomously assess the suitability and fit of patients' ear moulds and if deemed necessary, refer to qualified audiologists for further specialist opinions. The post holder will be required to utilise specific clinical and decision-making skills on a daily basis to autonomously provide necessary modifications to ear moulds using appropriate equipment.



This will include the use and handling of drills, grinders and polishers, which will result in exposure to acrylic dust and polishing soap. Thus, it is essential to adhere to the local and / or corporate health and safety policy.



To effectively communicate with clients, visitors, staff and associated colleagues that attend the department or make contact via external sources i.e. telephone, email and utilising highly developed interpersonal skills, effectively communicate with those individuals that may be anxious and/or distressed.



Due to the nature of the role, the post holder will be exposed infrequently to hazardous biological materials, this may include bodily fluids such as blood, discharge and ear wax.



The post holder may be required to transport or move heavy audiological equipment, IT equipment, patients attending the department in wheelchairs, assisting patients whilst walking etc, from one clinical setting to another on a daily basis. The post holder will be aware of manual handling techniques and adhere to UHB policy.



The post holder will be required to utilise specific routine IT skills on a daily basis to access local and organisational patient administration systems, email, IT office packages, internet sites and UHB intranet.



The post holder will be required to provide appointments to those patients who have lost hearing aids and as a result, undertake appropriate administration to ensure that full payment of fees for re-issue have been made via the hospitals General Office.



Utilising specific judgemental and IT skills, the post holder will be required to transfer written and existing paper files to electronic form, input specific audiological data, test results and assessment outcomes, in addition to updating current electronic records and utilising the departments electronic patient administration system.



Professional Duties



Regularly and routinely be observed completing own duties.



Support trainee audiologists, individuals attending the department on work experience, newly qualified audiologists and colleagues of other professions that attend the department for clinical placement.



Assist staff in clinical audit sessions.
