Job Description

The Blood Sciences Department at the Wirral University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust currently has vacancies for Healthcare Science Support Workers (HSSW) - Band 2.
The role includes working as part of a team of otherstaff within the Blood Sciencesspecimen reception.
Main duties of the job
The role will involve working in a high pressured environment taking receipt of large volumes of laboratory specimens. Checking and examining electronic and paper requests and transfer requests onto the Laboratory Information System in preparation for sample analysis.
You will be rostered into the laboratory department as part of a team of Band 2 staff, carrying out technical, clerical and administrative duties on both Wirral University Teaching Hospital sites - Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge hospitals
It is essential that you have the ability to work flexibly between the hours of 07:00 and 21:00, inclusive of Saturday and Sunday and Bank Holiday, on rotation.

  • 5 GCSE's or equivalent
  • IT Literate with good keyboard skills
  • To have a basic understanding of good laboratory practice and health and safety
Desirable
  • GCSE (or equivalent) at grade A-C in English, Mathematics and a Science subject
  • NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in a relevant subject
Knowledge and Skills
Essential
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Manual dexterity. Ability to use laboratory equipment ranging from manual pipettes to automated analysers

  • Experience in a modern Blood Sciences Laboratory, gained in the last 3 years
  • Experience using a laboratory information management system
