Job summary




We have an exciting opportunity for a a post-doctoral scientist who will be supporting surveillance activities and reference work for enteric viruses at the Enteric Virus Unit (EVU) within UKHSA.


EVU is the national reference laboratory for a range of enteric virus pathogens including enterovirus, rotavirus and norovirus. The main focus of the laboratory's work is to provide specialist reference services for human enteric viruses through surveillance programmes and outbreak investigations in the UK and internationally.


The successful applicant will have a PhD degree in Microbiology or related biological science subject and experience of working in a molecular laboratory.


On a day-to-day basis, the successful applicant will be working in a laboratory environment, developing assays to support EVU activities. There is also a strong component of data analysis and generation of reports as well as training and staff supervision required for this role


Good organisational and communication skills are essential as the post holder will be working as part of a dynamic team and in collaboration with internal, national and international partners.

Job description




The EVU is the national reference laboratory for a range of enteric virus pathogens including enterovirus, rotavirus and norovirus. The focus of the laboratory's work is to provide specialist reference services for human enteric viruses through surveillance programmes and outbreak investigations in the UK and internationally.


The post holder will provide laboratory support for the identification and characterisation of clinical enteric viruses.


Some of the main responsibilities are:

Expansion of the Unit capabilities for virus characterisation, including assay development and validation. Contribute to the development of information technology systems and databases as required. Data analysis including sequencing and characterisation information. Support surveillance activities, including liaising with internal and external partners. Collate and present data for discussion and reporting.

Location




This role is being offered as lab based working at our Scientific Campus in Colindale, London. Please note that hybrid working is not available for this role.

Future location




UKHSA is investing in a new state-of-the-art National Biosecurity Centre in Harlow, Essex, which will eventually bring together teams currently based at Canary Wharf, Colindale and Porton Down. For more details, please see: Huge biosecurity centre investment to boost pandemic protection - GOV.UK.


The new facilities will start becoming operational in the mid-2030s, with full completion by 2038. Staff will move in phases as facilities become available. If you're appointed to a role currently based at Canary Wharf, Colindale or Porton Down, please note that we'll continue investing in these sites for the next decade. As we get closer to the transition, we'll provide full information about relocation support available to staff.

ecurity Clearance Level Requirement




Successful candidates must pass a disclosure and barring security check.


Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed. The level of security needed is Counter-terrorist Check clearance.


For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time. You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for the last 3 years as the role requires Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) clearance.
