Herd Manager For 900 Holstein Friesian Cows

Scotland - Somerset, United Kingdom

Job Description

We currently have a superb opportunity for someone to join the management team on a very successful, well established, and well invested dairy business.
The herd is split block calved in two 12-week blocks, with 50% in the spring and autumn. The cows can be housed in spacious modern sand bedded cubicles with very easy passage scraping and feed access. The grazing platform is 200Ha and has been set up with all the necessary infrastructure to include well maintained tracks, mains electric fencing, multiple entry and exit points and good water supply. Weekly grass measurements and Agrinet are used for optimising milk from forage.
The most recent investment, last year, was the installation of a 70-point Waikato rotary parlour with associated cattle handling facilities. The parlour is equipped with ACR's, deck sprayers and in parlour feeders and is accessed via a large collecting yard with backing gate. Auto shedding into spacious vet holding pen and race, covered hydraulic foot crush and auto fill footbaths are just some of the cattle handling facilities.
SenseHub monitoring and Uniform recording are used to manage herd health and fertility.
The successful candidate needs to be entirely cow focused with particular emphasis on herd health / welfare and fertility. AI and foot trimming skills will be important. However, training can be provided. This will be a leadership role and as such good communication, work ethic and people management traits will be vital.
Whilst this is not a non-milking role, parlour time will be limited as there is a dedicated milking team.
The team is supported with continuous development, attendance at local discussion group meetings, dairy industry events as well as specific training for the role.
You will be required to work 11-days on with every other 3-day weekend off, as well as additional holiday entitlement.
An attractive 4-bedroom detached farmhouse with central heating, double glazing, a large garden, and stables / outbuildings will be provided, rent and council tax free.
For an informal discussion please contact Trevor Jolley on 07766 912481.
