Key responsibilities
Operating specialist equipment:
Driving and operating heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) that are designed to carry abnormal, heavy, and oversized loads. This requires advanced driving competence and experience with Class 1 (C+E) licenses.
Load handling and securing:
Manually assisting with and supervising the secure loading and unloading of cargo. For heavy haulage, this is a highly critical task that ensures the safety of the driver, other road users, and the cargo itself.
Route planning and navigation:
Collaborating with transport and logistics managers to plan the safest and most efficient routes. This is particularly complex for heavy haulage, as routes must account for load dimensions, weight restrictions, and potential obstacles like bridges and tight corners.
Handling permits and regulations:
Working with the company's permits team to adhere to strict legal requirements for abnormal load notifications. For a heavy haulage driver, this includes understanding and executing permits required for special orders and liaising with police escorts and local authorities.
Vehicle inspections and maintenance:
Performing comprehensive daily vehicle walk-around checks to ensure the truck is legally compliant, roadworthy, and safe to operate. For heavy haulage, this involves specific attention to the vehicle and trailer's specialized components.
Paperwork and record-keeping:
Completing accurate logbooks, delivery records, and other transport documents. Drivers must also manage their own driving hours to comply with strict industry regulations.
Safety and compliance:
Adhering to all health and safety procedures and road regulations. This includes the extra safety precautions necessary when moving extremely heavy or wide loads.
Client communication:
Representing the company professionally and communicating effectively with customers and staff at collection and delivery sites.
Working away from home:
Given the nature of long-distance and special-project heavy haulage, drivers should expect to spend periods away from home.
Team collaboration:
Although often working independently on the road, heavy haulage drivers work closely with a larger team, including transport managers, pilot car escorts, and route planners.
