Hgv Tanker Operative – Sewerage & Waste

Job Description

Job Purpose:



To operate HGV vacuum tankers for the collection, transport, and disposal of liquid waste, sewage, and sludge from domestic, commercial, and industrial sites. You'll ensure all duties are carried out in accordance with environmental and health & safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities:



Operate Class 2 or Class 1 vacuum tankers to collect and transport sewage, septic waste, or contaminated water from customer sites or emergency call-outs. Perform safe and efficient suction and discharge of liquid waste using vacuum equipment. Conduct daily vehicle checks and report any defects or maintenance issues. Follow planned schedules and respond to emergency requests, including sewer flooding or blockage support. Complete all necessary documentation accurately, such as job sheets, waste transfer notes, and vehicle logs. Work closely with other team members, engineers, and customers to ensure effective service delivery. Ensure safe working practices at all times, including use of PPE, confined space entry procedures (if trained), and spill response. Clean and maintain the tanker and associated hoses and equipment to ensure hygiene and functionality. Adhere to all company policies, road traffic laws, and environmental standards.

Qualifications & Experience:



Essential:



HGV Category C (Class 2) licence (Class 1 desirable). Valid Driver CPC and digital tachograph card. Experience operating vacuum or liquid waste tankers. Good knowledge of road transport laws and waste handling regulations.

Desirable:



Confined space training (NC2 or equivalent). High pressure water jetting certification. Knowledge of working with sewage treatment systems or drainage networks. ADR licence (beneficial for hazardous waste but not always required).

Skills & Attributes:



Strong awareness of health & safety practices, particularly in waste and sewer environments. Physically fit and willing to work outdoors in all conditions. Flexible attitude with willingness to work overtime or be part of a standby rota. Professional approach when dealing with customers and the public. Reliable and punctual with a good work ethic.

Working Conditions:



Work may involve unsociable hours, including early mornings, weekends, or emergency callouts. Role involves outdoor work, exposure to unpleasant materials, and physical activity such as hose handling and confined entry.
