We are currently looking for a Highways and Active Travel Engineer to join the team in Belfast. The successful candidate will take responsibility in all aspects of highway design to work on local, national, and international schemes from our city center office. We would like to hear from individuals who have demonstrable highways and Active Travel experience

The Belfast office has an established track record of successfully delivering road schemes and works closely with other disciplines from Structures, Geotechnical, Environment, Transport Planning and Development Sectors. The team workload ranges from feasibility studies to scheme designs, working with a variety of clients both from the public and private sector including design & build partnerships with contractors

Current projects being undertaken by our Belfast Roads team include:

  • York Street Interchange
  • A6 Dungiven to Drumahoe
  • A24 Ballynahinch Bypass
  • Newry Southern Relief Road
  • Bus Connects
  • Various Cycleway and Greenway Schemes
Whilst the above highlights some of our local projects there are also significant opportunities for the right candidate to contribute to a wider UK & Ireland portfolio of projects.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Mentor, support, and provide day to day guidance and leadership for junior design team members - gradates, apprentices, and trainee technicians.
  • Work under the direction of and in support to Principal / Senior Engineers to perform tasks in accordance with agreed budget and schedule with little supervision, possessing the ability to solve any problems encountered along with identifying discrepancies in results.
  • Assist in the provision of technical inputs, across a range of specialisms in the field of Roads and Civil engineering.
  • Show technical competence and through experience, gather and take on board the skills of others in computer-based applications and tasks including use of software such as Open Roads/Civil 3D, Micro Drainage, and the Microsoft Office Suite of programmes including MS Project.
  • Undertake project activities in line with company policy, including technical and commercial aspects.
  • Take an assistant role on projects.
  • Contribute to the development of technical proposals and propose approaches to assist in solving new problems encountered.
  • Plan, lead and undertake site visits as required.
  • Plan and attend meetings - internal and external, as required, and act as a trusted client advisor.
  • Liaise and manage sub-consultants and external parties.
  • Participate as a team member on a number of levels, including; office disciplines and projects.
  • Be proactive and contribute to a safer work environment along with personal, professional development.
Minimum Requirements
  • Experience in the field of urban design and road design, ideally including experience of DMURS, National Cycle Manual, TII standards, or other equivalent standards.
  • Experience as a designer on road projects
  • Experience of CAD and CDE environments such as ProjectWise
  • Knowledge of H&S and the implementation of PSDP processes on projects.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering or a related subject
  • Knowledge of the use Civil 3D, OpenRoads, or Micro Drainage.
  • Working towards Incorporated/Chartered Engineer status of respective professional institution
  • Safe Pass
