Position holders will be required to provide technical support for veterinary diagnostic post mortem examinations under the direction of our pathologists. They will also assist with the processing of routine diagnostic specimens and associated documentation in our Keighley laboratory and will be expected to perform all designated tasks within the laboratory to ensure the efficient running of our diagnostic histopathology service. The further development of departmental technical protocols may be required, as will liaison with IZVG staff in other departments, including our clinical veterinarians.
Part time working may be considered for an appropriate candidate.
Duties
Assisting pathologists during gross post mortem examinations and maintaining a clean, safe, and compliant post mortem facility.
Receiving, processing, and documenting diagnostic samples with a focus on histopathology and cytology, following established SOPs and quality standards.
Managing laboratory databases, archives, and sample banks, including digital accessioning and the coordination of sample referrals to external laboratories.
Supporting the development and optimisation of histological techniques, including special stains, and contributing to technical innovation and continuous improvement.
Ensuring strict adherence to health and safety protocols, quality systems, and laboratory best practices.
Collaborating effectively across departments and communicating issues or process improvements to senior staff.
Participating in audits, SOP development, and ongoing training to enhance professional skills and maintain laboratory excellence.
Qualifications
HNC, BSc or an equivalent qualification, preferably in Biomedical/Bioveterinary Science.
And/or relevant training in histology/pathology (e.g. within a CRO or NHS environment)
Experience:
Appropriate experience working within a histology laboratory environment, with evidence of competence in all routine aspects of histological processing. Additional experience in other laboratory disciplines including cytology, diagnostic microbiology, parasitology and post mortem/mortuary technique would be beneficial. It is expected that candidates will be comfortable working with veterinary cadaver material.
