PROTECTION OF CHILDREN AND YOUNG PERSONS (THE CHILDREN'S ACT 1989)

BACKGROUND TO THE POST
The appointed person will need to provide practical instruction at relevant industry standards. You will work closely with lecturing teaching staff and this will include providing practical support, instruction, training and supervision to students in practical subjects both on an individual and group basis. The person will also be responsible for the preparation of materials and maintenance of resources for practical tasks.
We ensure that provision is learner focused, which leads to academic excellence, high quality learning and an outstanding student experience which reflects the commercial focused curriculum delivery model and contributes to the achievement of the College's strategic and development plans.
WCG is one of the largest FE colleges in the UK. We have five centres offering a range of vocational subjects with over 20,000 enrolments. Animal related programmes are delivered at both our Landbased Colleges (Moreton Morrell and Pershore). The Animal Welfare and Veterinary Nursing Department delivers courses to students ranging from Foundation Learning to BSc (Hons) Degree level.
The Animal Welfare Centres within WCG include housing for a range of animal species including canines, felines, small and large mammals, aquatics, invertebrates, avians, reptiles, exotics and other specialist animal facilities. Currently, the department is reviewing its animal stock strategy and is looking to develop a broader range of exotic species and drive a more commercially minded edge to appeal both to students and members of the public. The Centre operates all year round with activity occurring outside the academic year and at weekends and holidays. It is staffed by a range of staff including Instructor/Technicians, Apprentices and Temporary Casual Staff who work on a rota basis to cover weekends and holiday periods. For this reason, the post-holder is expected to be able to support the centre during times of the year where there could be adverse weather conditions to ensure the safety and welfare of the animals on site and thus local geographical presence is essential.
PURPOSE OF THE POST
This is an important post involving both technical support for the Animal Centre alongside practical demonstrations/instruction of students/stakeholders. It offers opportunities for personal development and growing responsibilities within the department.
Create a learning environment that will enable students to achieve their full potential in relation to facilities and resources available to them and support the teaching staff.
Contribute to the creation and maintenance of a professional and immaculate image and high standards of the Animal Welfare Centre.
Contribute to the Animal Centres commercial enterprise strategy to ensure successful delivery for all stakeholders.
Deliver practical training/instruction to animal learners at all levels.
Carry out training and assessment for learners to include the following tasks:
Skills/technical competence development within the animal environment.
Support candidates to achieve their qualifications.
Provide feedback on progress
Guide and coach the candidates.
Assessment of competence to national standards.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To develop the skills of students within the subject area and provide a high standard of technical support.
To demonstrating practical skills, methods, techniques.
Assessing student competence of the practical skill(s) and giving the associated feedback.
Ensure students can demonstrate skills and behaviours required for the successful completion of the qualification or course and ensure they provide the knowledge that underpins the practical instruction.
Support training in the demonstration or explanation of skills or behaviours required.
Utilise prepared Scheme of Work to instruct / prepare sessions.
Complete relevant assessment paperwork, which can include questioning students to check understanding of the practical task/skill/behaviour.
To maintain resources and prepare and set up physical materials and equipment for horticultural related activities.
To carry out any such maintenance on all tools and workshop equipment.
To order workshop equipment and materials in conjunction with the team.
To maintain the unit and equipment to current Health & Safety standards.
To attend team meetings, open events, college tasters and outside events as required.
To ensure all students are aware of the Health & Safety guidelines in the unit.
To attend college delivered 'Teaching Essentials' training
Technicians are not expected to:
To teach theory.
To write schemes of work.
To deal with knowledge based assessment.
To mark work outside of the practical setting.
In order to support during busy exam periods, you may be asked to undertake exam invigilator duties. The College will provide training.

HOURS OF WORK
The post holder will be expected to work such hours as are necessary for the proper performance of their duties and responsibilities, this is a zero hour post.
PLACE OF WORK
The principal place of work will be the College's premises based at our Pershore College. However, the post holder may be required to work on either a temporary or an indefinite basis at any premises at which we may provide services.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential Attainments
Educated to Level 2 in Animal Welfare or demonstrable experience
Evidence of formal structured training in a relevant vocation.
Be flexible with the ability to adapt to changing situations.
Flexible availability for weekend and holiday cover
Working knowledge of information technology such as e-mail, the internet and other software applications.
Excellent administrative and organisational skills.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
Desirable Attainments
Experience of instructing.
Assessment qualifications, Awards, or equivalent.
Industry experience in an animal welfare environment including the care of large and small exotic species.
Membership of professional Animal related groups.
Knowledge of the Zoological collections sector.
Experience of managing a Zoological collection in a commercial environment.
Experience in delivering practical training in Animal Welfare or a related discipline.
A full clean driving licence.
