We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join a premier team of HVAC Mechanics at the 100th Civil Engineering Squadron, Royal Air Force (RAF) Mildenhall, United Kingdom.
What will be your primary role?
The primary purpose of this position is to lead three or more workers to accomplish HVAC maintenance and repair work on a substantially full time and continuing basis. As leader, you will be responsible for performing the work assigned by a supervisor and ensures that subordinates complete assigned work consistent with trades and labor standards. You will install, modify, test, repair, and maintain a variety of complex boilers, heating equipment, pollution control equipment and associated systems. In addition, you will repair and maintain a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems used to condition areas and to cool equipment. You will perform routine preventive maintenance on heating systems and refrigeration and air conditioning units (i.e. visually examining and operationally testing electric, electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems and equipment using specialized test equipment).
Qualification requirements for the position:
College level education minimum Level 3 in the appropriate discipline (i.e. City & Guilds 6188-30/6188-31/6188-32/6288-31) plus related experience.

What are the Key Skills required for this role?
1. Knowledge of the standard methods of combustion, heat transfer principles, and fuel characteristics to install, repair, and maintain heating boilers and domestic heating units and systems; the principles and theories of the refrigeration cycle, temperature measurement, and properties of several refrigerants; and pneumatics, electricity, and basic electronics to locate faults in temperature controls and control devices, such as damper motors, mixing valves, and modulating motors.
2. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures; and regulations, procedures, and policies related to records maintenance and documentation.
3. Skill in performing routine maintenance on small electric motors, feed pumps, and valves, including replacing brushes, seals, bearings, and repacking valves; servicing power sources and replacing items such as belts, fans, and fuses; installing, aligning, adjusting, and repairing oil, gas, and coal burners and other burning mechanisms as well as heating boiler components; and making repairs on refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems, including replacing major portions of assigned systems.
4. Skill in reading and applying work orders, blueprints, sketches, and other oral and written instructions.
5. Skill in the use of hand tools, power tools, precision measuring devices, and a variety of test equipment.
6. Ability to use shop mathematics to compute fuel consumption rates, heat generating units, and air-to-fuel ratios and conversions.
7. Ability to lead a team of three or more labor or trade employees.
8. Ability to plan and organize work assignments to include determining resources required to accomplish mission.
What are the conditions of employment for this role?
1. You will be required to handle and safeguard sensitive information in accordance with applicable US and UK laws, rules and regulations.
2. You may be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft and you may also be required to travel to the US or other country, in the performance of official duties or attend necessary training, this position may also be coded as mission essential.
3. You will be required to complete a 6-month probationary period.
4. Overtime may be required, and you may be assigned other duties not included in this position description, but that are appropriate to the grade and skill set of the incumbent.
5. You must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
6. You must pass a pre-employment physical for this position. Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth.
7. You are required to possess a valid driver's license (Category B) in order to drive a motor vehicle to and from work sites.
8. Hours of work: 39 hours weekly. Fixed schedule: Mon-Fri 08.00 -1630. Start & end times may be modified due to mission needs and in accordance with organization's flexible working policies.
9. You may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Overtime and/or emergency overtime may be required, however cannot be guaranteed and should not be expected. Shift work may be required.
10. You may be required to facilitate an on-call function over a 24-hour period covering 7 days a week as per the manning roster. On-call allowance is activated only during the period of time the employee is performing the function of the on-call responsibilities. On-call allowance is not payable during periods of leave, sick absence, or when employee is not rostered.
11. You may work with hazardous materials such as asbestos or accumulated waste. You will be required to wear protective clothing and gear on these occasions.
12. You will be required to maintain appropriate certifications in accordance with US and UK industry standards.
13. You must have, or successfully complete, in-house system familiarization and pass review with DIO Authorized Person (Boilers and Pressure Systems) to gain Skilled Person certification within 12 months of employment. Training to achieve can be provided. Failure to obtain certification within 12 month period due to employee negligence will result in separation from position. If failure to obtain certifications is due to circumstances outside the employee's control, management will work with the employee to satisfy the requirements within a reasonable time frame.
