The Hygiene Operative plays a vital role in maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and food safety across all areas of the bakery. This includes cleaning production equipment, food contact surfaces, and general facilities to ensure compliance with internal standards and external regulations such as BRCGS, HACCP, and customer audit requirements. The role supports the safe and efficient production of high-quality frozen and ambient bread products.
Key Responsibilities:
Cleaning & Sanitation
Carry out scheduled daily, weekly, and deep cleaning of production lines, equipment, floors, walls, and food contact areas.
Follow detailed cleaning instructions and work in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Use appropriate chemicals and equipment safely and effectively as trained (e.g. foaming units, pressure washers, sanitation tools).
Food Safety Compliance
Adhere to all food hygiene, allergen, and contamination control procedures.
Follow colour-coded cleaning regimes to prevent cross-contamination.
Ensure documentation and cleaning records are completed accurately and in full (e.g. cleaning logs, checklists).
Teamwork & Communication
Work collaboratively with hygiene, production, and technical teams to coordinate cleaning around production schedules.
Report any maintenance or pest control issues immediately to the Hygiene Supervisor or relevant departments.
Support new team members with on-the-job training and guidance as required.
Health & Safety
Always wear correct PPE and work in line with COSHH and manual handling guidelines.
Identify and report any safety hazards or unsafe practices.
Ensure cleaning materials are stored safely and securely after use.
Skills & Experience:
Essential:
Previous experience in a hygiene or cleaning role, ideally in a food manufacturing environment
Basic understanding of hygiene, health & safety, and COSHH regulations
Attention to detail and ability to follow procedures precisely
Physically fit and comfortable working in chilled and industrial environments
Good verbal communication and teamwork skills
Desirable:
Food Hygiene or Health & Safety certificate (Level 2)
Experience in a high-care or high-risk bakery, dairy, or meat processing environment
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
Working Hours:
Shift-based role, which may include early mornings, nights, weekends, or rotating patterns
Flexibility is required during deep cleans, audits, or production downtime
Overtime may be available depending on operational needs
Working Environment:
Industrial bakery environment with exposure to flour, allergens, and cleaning chemicals
Cold and warm areas depending on site layout (e.g. ambient production vs frozen storage)
Standing, bending, lifting, and manual cleaning required for long periods
