Purpose of the Post

Advocacy for Individuals and Families Affected by Substance Use

The primary purpose of this post is to provide advocacy support to individuals who have experienced alcohol or drug dependency, as well as to their families. The role is designed to champion a person-centred approach, focusing on those who have disengaged from support services or are at significant risk of doing so. The aim is to ensure that these individuals have their voices heard, their needs recognised, and that they are actively responded to by relevant services and professionals.

Focus on High-Risk and Vulnerable Groups

The advocacy caseload associated with this post will predominantly involve individuals and groups identified as high risk and vulnerable. This targeted approach ensures that the support provided is directed to those most in need of advocacy intervention.

Strengthening Voices and Upholding Human Rights

As an advocate, you will play a key role in amplifying the voices of those who may be unable, or feel powerless, to speak up for themselves. Advocacy is especially critical for people who struggle to communicate their wishes or assert their rights. Your work will centre on delivering positive outcomes, helping people understand their options, and empowering them to participate in decision-making processes that affect their lives.

You will support individuals in articulating their views and preferences, assisting them in making challenges where necessary, and, when appropriate, asking important questions on their behalf to ensure their perspectives are fully represented.

Collaboration with Local Support Services

This role involves close collaboration with other support services across Dundee. Working together with partner organisations, you will help develop and enhance services to meet the needs of individuals and families affected by alcohol and drug dependency, ensuring a comprehensive and coordinated approach to support.

Implementation of MAT (Medically Assisted Treatments) Standards

A key aspect of the post is to understand and assist in the implementation of the MAT (Medically Assisted Treatments) standards, as they relate to this role. This ensures that advocacy is aligned with best practice and statutory requirements, providing effective support to those accessing or considering medically assisted treatment options.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities

Advocacy Casework

As part of the role, you will be responsible for carrying an advocacy caseload. This involves actively promoting self-advocacy among advocate partners, while also intervening and advocating on their behalf when required. You are expected to follow the established case-working standards and adhere to agreed monitoring systems, requirements, and service goals as determined in collaboration with DIAS management.

Collaboration and Service Development

You will work closely with other substance user services across Dundee, collaborating to develop and improve services that address the needs of individuals and families affected by alcohol and drug substance use. Flexibility is key, as you are required to function as a proactive member of the DIAS Advocacy team, contributing to service planning and development. Additionally, you may be called upon to provide cover both within the team and across the organisation as needed.

Safeguarding and Professional Practice

A central aspect of your responsibilities is to proactively identify and address any safeguarding concerns, always acting in accordance with the organisation's established policies and procedures. You are expected to maintain up-to-date, accurate advocacy case notes using the DIAS database system, and to ensure that all administrative records are completed in a timely and appropriate manner. Administrative tasks should be managed independently, in line with DIAS confidentiality protocols and GDPR guidelines.

Communication and Liaison

You will be required to liaise effectively with both the voluntary and statutory sectors, as well as other relevant bodies, to guarantee that advocate partners have access to independent advocacy. Part of your role involves working alongside other professionals involved in a person's care from the point of referral onwards, assisting individuals in expressing their wishes and views.

Identifying Needs and Outreach

You should identify and report any unmet needs or gaps in advocacy provision to the DIAS Manager as requested. Furthermore, you will access and identify individuals who may benefit from independent advocacy through outreach work conducted in a variety of settings.

Teamwork and Professional Development

Being a supportive and professional team member is essential at all times. You may also be expected to help deliver awareness-raising sessions to various professionals and organisations, as required, and to assist in promoting DIAS when asked. You should contribute to the creation or selection of training resources and materials, and participate in meetings or training opportunities that help develop and promote effective independent advocacy.

Meetings, Training, and Other Duties

You are expected to attend and participate in staff and team meetings, contributing to discussions and providing reports as necessary.
