Job Description

Do you have the time and skills to make a positive and independent contribution to Canterbury City Council's Audit Committee?







We are looking to appoint two Independent Members to the Audit Committee, ideally someone with financial, auditing and risk management experience.





The Independent Member will assist the Audit Committee to discharge their powers and functions:


To apply strategic thinking to reports from across the Council; To provide challenge and ask questions that draw out relevant facts and explanations; To seek understanding and provide solutions; To evaluate information on the basis of evidence presented without political bias; To weigh up differing views and be able to come to an evidence-based conclusion; To get to the facts while maintaining positive relationships.




Given the independent nature of this role, you should be someone who:


Has not been a councillor or officer of Canterbury City Council Is not a relative or close friend of a Councillor or officer of Canterbury City Council; Is not active in local or national politics, or a member of a political party or pressure group that would Has no current or significant previous personal, legal, business or contractual relationship with the Council (including employees, Councillors or former staff), or any other relationship or activity which might represent a conflict of interest or compromise their impartiality;



Terms of appointment:



The appointment will be for an initial period of three years The role will require attendance of up to five meetings per year, which are usually held at the Guildhall Canterbury in the evenings; You will need to undertake your duties in a politically neutral manner; You will be required to abide by the Council's Code of Conduct for Elected Members, which sets out expected standards of behaviour. You will be required to complete a Register of Interests form on an annual basis and keep this updated;




Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview with the Chair of the Audit Committee, the Director of Finance and the Head of Finance on Monday 1 September.





An allowance of 493 remuneration per year is payable for this role.
