Role Overview:

The Industrial Design Intern supports the Product Design Team by contributing to CAD modelling, technical drawings, documentation, prototyping support, and visual development across a wide range of engineered and experiential products.

This 12 month industrial placement is designed for students studying Product/Industrial Design who want to gain hands on experience within a fast paced, motorsport focused product environment. You will work alongside senior designers, consultants, and manufacturing teams, learning how ideas become physical products through structured design processes, Design for Manufacture (DFM), and real world build cycles.

This role provides a strong foundation in technical design skills, documentation, workshop exposure, and cross functional collaboration, allowing placement students to develop the confidence, capability, and discipline expected in industry.

Core Responsibilities:

CAD Modelling & Design Support:

o Assist with CAD updates, component modelling, and small assemblies under supervision.

o Support the preparation of concept models and early development geometry.

o Apply good modelling fundamentals, accuracy, and organisation within shared project files.

Technical Drawings & Documentation:

o Prepare and update technical drawings with guidance from the Product Design Team.

o Create exploded views, simple part callouts, annotation layers, and layout templates.

o Contribute to build manuals, assembly guides, and internal specification documents.

DFM Application & Awareness:

o Gain exposure to DFM principles and apply them in practical tasks.

o Learn how design decisions impact machining, fabrication, composites, and assembly processes.

o Support feedback loops between design, manufacturing, and suppliers.

Prototype & Assembly Involvement:

o Assist during prototype builds by taking measurements, documenting issues, and supporting hands on problem solving.

o Capture visual references and feedback to inform design updates.

o Help prepare parts, labels, and workshop documentation for new builds.

Team Collaboration & Contribution:

o Work closely with Midweight and Senior Designers on shared tasks.

o Communicate effectively with manufacturing, Procurement, and Creative teams.

o Take responsibility for assigned tasks and ask for support when required.

Key Deliverables & KPIs:

Accurate CAD updates and drawing outputs delivered to schedule.

Thorough, reliable support on documentation tasks.

Demonstrated learning and application of manufacturing and DFM principles.

Strong collaboration and communication with the wider team.

Improved efficiency of senior designers through dependable support.

Ideal Experience & Profile

Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Mechanical Engineering, or similar (1+ years of industry experience would be desirable).

Strong foundation in CAD modelling.

A basic understanding of manufacturing processes including:

o CNC Machining

o Fabrication & Welding

o Composites and related processes

o Plastics (including 3D Print)

o Sheet Metal & Laser Cutting

Good visual communication skills for technical documentation.

Comfortable working hands on with manufacturing and assembly teams.

Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks.

Passion for motorsport, engineering, and premium product experiences.

Positive, proactive, and eager to learn within a fast paced design and development environment.
