Job summary




UKHSA is looking for a knowledgeable, hard-working and enthusiastic Information Governance and Privacy Support Officer. Working in the Privacy team in the Information Management and Privacy (IMP) division, you will help provide an information governance and privacy support and assurance service to ensure that UKHSA fully complies with data protection law while maximising the public health benefit of the data and information it collects and uses to fulfil its remit as the national expert agency for health protection.


You will have detailed knowledge of data protection and privacy legislation, including the Data Protection Act and UK General Data Protection Regulation, and be aware of the guidance issued by the Information Commissioner's Office. A good understanding of the different types of data and information is vital, as is an awareness of the principles of data protection and information risk management.


You will have experience of working in an information governance and privacy service, preferably in the health and care sector. Experience of working in a team and an understanding of how to build positive and effective working relationships with colleagues are important.


You will be a self-starter who is able to work well under pressure, support several projects at the same time, and work effectively for periods without direct supervision. You will have strong writing skills and be confident when presenting your work and providing advice and support to others.

Job description



The main duties and responsibilities of the Information Governance and Privacy Support Officer are to:



Support the production and assurance of data protection impact assessments and privacy notices Provide administrative support to the Privacy team, such as maintaining the corporate register of processing activities, managing the Privacy team mailbox, and supporting the response to information governance and privacy incidents

Detailed job description and responsibilities:



Information governance and privacy support: provide support to key staff, particularly information asset owners, with the identification and management of information governance and privacy risks and issues Data protection impact assessment and privacy notice support and assurance: support the production and maintenance of DPIAs, privacy notices and other assurance and information risk management documents Maintaining corporate registers: support the update and maintenance of the corporate data protection impact assessment, privacy notice and related registers Building a strong data protection culture: support the triage and timely response to requests for information governance and privacy advice, and support the reporting and investigation of information governance and privacy incidents and near-misses Project management: support a range of information governance and privacy projects and initiatives to help strengthen the management of data and information risks and issues across UKHSA Cross-team working: work collaboratively across other teams in the IMP division - including data acquisition and sharing, data governance, and information and records management - on joint projects and initiatives Training provision: support the provision of information governance and privacy training to individuals and teams Representing the Privacy team: represent the Privacy team as required at internal information governance and privacy meetings, groups and forums Personal development: identify, discuss and action professional performance and training and development needs through the UKHSA appraisal and individual development plan processes; attend internal and external training events as required; and participate in UKHSA mandatory training as required ###

Essential criteria



Educated to degree level in a relevant subject, such as public health, law or subjects with a strong data science/analysis focus, or some experience working in an information governance or data protection role Within- and cross-team working skills Good interpersonal and communication skills Good writing and presentation skills Ability to work to deadlines and under pressure Ability to prioritise between competing pressures and demands Ability to work for periods without direct supervision An understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity and good working relationships

Desirable criteria:



Data security and protection qualification, such as BCS Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection, CIPP/E, etc. Project management qualification such as Agile Project Management Foundation Knowledge of data protection law Knowledge of the health and care system Experience of working in an information governance and privacy service Project management and delivery skills

This role is being offered as hybrid working based at our Core HQ in Canary Wharf, London.


We offer great flexible working opportunities at UKHSA and operate using a hybrid working model where business needs allow. This provides us with greater flexibility about how and where we work, to get the best from our workforce. As a hybrid worker, you will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of your contractual working hours (approximately 3 days a week pro rata, (averaged over a month).


Our core HQ offices are modern and newly refurbished with excellent city centre transport link and benefit from benefit from co-location with other government departments such as the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC).

Security Clearance Level Requirement



Successful candidates must pass a disclosure and barring security check.


Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed. The level of security needed is Basic Personnel Security Standard.

Eligibility Criteria - External

Salary Information




If you are successful at interview, and are moving from another government department, NHS, or Local Authority, the relevant starting salary principles for level transfers or promotions will apply. Otherwise, roles are offered at the pay scale minimum for the grade, but in exceptional circumstances there may be flexibility if you are able to demonstrate you are already in receipt of an existing, higher salary. Pay increases are through the relevant annual pay award for the role and terms.

Future location

The new facilities will start becoming operational in the mid-2030s, with full completion by 2038. Staff will move in phases as facilities become available.
