Job Description

The Innovation Technologist will be a pivotal member of the team with a wide range of duties within Tritech Institute. The post holder will work within a multidisciplinary team to design, develop, and test complex medical devices and software platforms. They also coordinate the Quality Management System (QMS) to ensure compliance with ISO 13485 standards. They will have a key role in developing innovative medical technologies to meet unmet clinical needs and will participate in delivery of a wide portfolio of research and innovation projects.



Key Responsibilities



Innovation & Development:



Design and develop novel medical devices and software.

Conduct precision repairs and testing in the development lab.

Participate in delivery of a wide range of projects (clinical trials, audits and wider innovation projects).



Quality Management:



Act as QMS Coordinator, ensuring compliance with ISO 13485.

Maintain accurate records and documentation.

Support continuous improvement initiatives.



Leadership & Supervision:



Supervise and mentor junior staff.



Deputise for the Clinical Scientist when required.

Organise and manage workloads and resources.



Communication & Collaboration:



Liaise with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders.



Provide technical guidance and training.

Represent the department in meetings and conferences.



Service Improvement & Compliance:



Contribute to service planning and policy development.



Ensure adherence to UHB policies and statutory regulations.

Promote equality, diversity, and environmental responsibility.

This post is a Fixed Term/ Secondment until 31.07.2026 due to funding. If you are a Hywel Dda University Health Board employee and are applying for this post as a secondment, agreement for the secondment is needed from your current manager prior to application.



Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties.



We have over 13,000 staff and together we provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services.



We work in partnership with the three local authorities, as well as public, private and third sector colleagues, including our valued team of volunteers.



Our services are provided in:



Four main hospitals:

Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth; Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen; Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli; and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest

Five community hospitals:

Amman Valley and Llandovery hospitals in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron Hospital in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire hospitals in Pembrokeshire

Two integrated care centres:

Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion, and several other community settings

47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers

Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services



The Innovation Technologist (Band 6) within the TriTech Institute & Innovation team plays a pivotal role in the development and implementation of novel medical technologies aimed at addressing unmet clinical needs.



Working autonomously within a multidisciplinary environment, the post holder is responsible for designing, testing, and refining complex medical devices and software platforms. A key aspect of the role includes coordinating the department's Quality Management System (QMS) in compliance with ISO 13485 standards, ensuring all policies and procedures are effectively implemented. The role also involves supervising junior staff, supporting clinical trials, maintaining accurate technical documentation, and deputising for the Clinical Scientist in their absence.



The post holder contributes to service improvement, staff development, and fosters a culture of continuous innovation and quality within the department.
