An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Interim Head of Supply Chain at the Wellcome Sanger Institute - one of the world’s leading genome research Institute’s and whom is making a difference to health outcomes during the Covid-19 pandemic and beyond. The Opportunity This new and varied position will see the role holder taking responsibility and managing the end-to-end internal supply chain across the Institute from scientific demand across the different programmes, to supply capacity within our scientific operations department, via procurement and fulfilment operations and warehousing / stock holding. Currently forecasting is not standardised or comprehensive and a key component of the role will involve liaising with different functional areas to embed a workable short-term solution to join up requirements across the whole supply chain to make it work effectively. A further key requirement will be to plan, recommend and then implement a longer-term sustainable systems and process solution. You will join a senior management team reporting into the Director of Scientific Operations with a dotted line to the Chief Financial Officer who has responsibility for procurement and stores. About you We seek an experienced candidate who is team-orientated, with an innovative and creative approach, and can demonstrate problem solving and decision-making skills. You will require a blend of interpersonal and persuasive skills able to collaborate with people at all levels to successfully engage with busy people, be self-motivated, able to work independently and organise your own workload. You will require passion, energy and diplomacy in connecting a supply chain that has historically been distributed across separate departments who all operate independently with good technical experience, the willingness to be hands on in developing and implementing a “manual” solution and the drive to implement a systems solution. Essential Skills Qualification:

  • A good Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an accredited university, preferably in business, engineering, computer science, supply chain management or another relevant subject;
  • Extensive and recent relevant knowledge and experience of operational and supply chain management or complex manufacturing operational management with warehouse management experience;
  • In-depth experience of sales and operations planning (S&OP) processes including demand and supply planning / forecasting across different departments;
  • Blend of hands-on industry expertise and strategic thinking;
  • An understanding of manufacturing processes and global distribution networks and the ability to use low tech and more innovative technology to resolve problems and implement business solutions;
  • Experience in operational KPIs, Balance Score Cards, and a reporting/ review process to ensure continuous improvement of the operational performance of the business;
  • Experience within performance improvement projects

  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and organise own workload
  • Be a champion for equality, diversity and inclusion, and work collaboratively with a range of different stakeholders
Ideal Skills
  • MBA or Masters qualification preferred but not required
  • APICS, CPIM, CSPS, MCIPS or MCILT desirable;
  • Active membership of other supply chain associations/organisations offering additional education and training, useful information and focus on improving business standards;
  • A varied cross sector background (this could include pharmaceutical, FMCG, automotive, manufacturing, energy, retail, consumer goods, transport, business services and healthcare);
  • Understanding and execution of LEAN production philosophy
