Job Summary:
As an Intermediate Design Engineer, you will play a key role in the design and development of engineering solutions within a multi-disciplinary team. You will be responsible for delivering detailed designs, performing technical analysis, and assisting senior engineers across various projects. This role offers the opportunity to further develop your skills, taking on increased responsibility and growing towards senior positions. Working closely with senior engineers and project leaders, you will gain exposure to all stages of the project lifecycle, from initial concept design to final construction.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Design & Technical Input:
Develop detailed engineering designs, calculations, drawings, and specifications in collaboration with senior engineers.
Work on civil, structural, mechanical or electrical engineering aspects, depending on your specialisation.
Assist in preparing design documentation that complies with UK building regulations, industry standards, and client specifications.
Coordinate with other disciplines to ensure that design solutions are fully integrated and technically sound.
Engage in problem-solving and creative design to provide cost-effective and innovative engineering solutions.
2. Project Support:
Assist in delivering engineering projects from concept to completion, ensuring deadlines and client requirements are met.
Contribute to project planning, helping senior engineers and project managers in preparing timelines, budgets, and resource allocation.
Support the preparation of reports, presentations, and documentation for internal use and client meetings.
Participate in site visits, surveys, and inspections to gather data and understand project constraints.
Collaborate with contractors, design team and others to ensure successful project outcomes.
3. Technical Analysis & Modelling:
Perform engineering calculations and analysis for design solutions, using relevant design software.
Use digital tools and engineering software to model and simulate designs, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
Assist in reviewing technical data, design inputs, and specifications provided by other disciplines or project teams.
4. Quality Assurance & Compliance:
Ensure designs and documentation comply with UK building codes, relevant regulations, and industry best practices.
Conduct self-checks and peer reviews of designs to maintain a high standard of accuracy and quality.
Support senior engineers in identifying and mitigating potential risks in designs, ensuring robust and reliable solutions.
Take part in design reviews and internal audits to ensure continuous improvement in design processes.
5. Collaboration & Teamwork:
Work closely with senior engineers, junior engineers, and technicians, contributing to a collaborative team environment.
Support team members by sharing knowledge and helping with design challenges as required.
Take responsibility for specific design packages or smaller project elements, reporting progress to senior engineers.
Communicate effectively within the team and with external stakeholders to ensure seamless project delivery.
6. Client Interaction:
Assist in communicating design concepts and technical solutions to clients, ensuring their needs are understood and incorporated into project designs.
Attend client meetings, workshops, and presentations, supporting senior engineers in responding to technical queries and feedback.
Provide ongoing support to clients during project delivery, ensuring that any design changes or modifications are implemented effectively.
7. Professional Development:
Actively pursue professional development and work towards achieving Chartered Engineer status (e.g., ICE, IStructE, CIBSE) if desired.
Take advantage of training, mentorship, and learning opportunities provided by the company to enhance your technical skills and knowledge.
Stay up to date with the latest industry trends, regulations, and advancements in engineering technology.
Key Skills & Experience:
Relevant Qualifications in engineering (Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical) or relevant experience.
Typically, 3-5 years' experience in a building engineering consultancy or similar environment.
A solid understanding of engineering principles and design processes within your area of expertise (structural, mechanical, electrical, or environmental).
Proficiency in relevant engineering software for design and analysis.
Knowledge of UK building regulations, standards, and codes of practice.
Good problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop innovative and practical design solutions.
Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present technical information clearly to a range of stakeholders.
