About the team..
Our Internal Audit Team is a high-performing, forward-thinking function of seventeen professionals supported by Co Source from the Big 4. We act as trusted advisors to the Board and Executive, providing independent strategic insights and assurance on governance, risk management, and control effectiveness, thereby helping Network Rail deliver its strategic objectives.
We're on an exciting journey to modernise our audit approach, harnessing technology, AI, data analytics, and agile ways of working to deliver sharper, faster, and more impactful assurance.
To help us take the next step, we're looking for an Internal Audit Manager who is digitally confident, strategically minded, and passionate about driving meaningful change
What does the average day look like?
In this role, every day brings the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on how Network Rail manages risk and delivers assurance. You'll lead the development and delivery of a risk-based audit plan focused on areas of strategic importance, ensuring our work adds real value to the organisation. Your day will involve inspiring, coaching, and developing a diverse team of auditors, creating an environment where collaboration, innovation, and professional growth thrive. You'll also build trusted relationships with executive leaders, audit committees, and operational teams, helping to strengthen governance, controls, and risk culture across the business.
You'll play a key part in advancing our transformational internal audit strategy, ensuring it aligns with our corporate priorities and drives continuous improvement in how we operate. From refining audit methodologies and enhancing reporting quality to embracing new technologies and automation, you'll help embed data-driven insights into every aspect of our work. You'll produce impactful board-level reports that highlight key themes and insights from audit activity, influencing decision-making at the highest level. Throughout it all, you'll champion collaboration and knowledge sharing across teams and regions, helping to elevate the value and visibility of internal audit across Network Rail.
Who are we looking for?
We're looking for talented and forward-thinking audit professionals who are ready to make an impact in a complex and high-profile organisation. You'll bring a strong background in internal audit, risk, or assurance, ideally gained in large, regulated, or operationally intensive environments where you've learned to navigate complexity and drive meaningful change. For one of our roles, experience in Safety, Health, and Environment will be especially valuable. You'll hold a recognised professional qualification such as Chartered Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor, Chartered Engineer, or an equivalent certification, and may also hold a NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.
You'll have a deep understanding of internal control frameworks, risk management, and audit methodologies, coupled with the ability to think critically and see the bigger picture. You know how to lead and inspire teams, earning the confidence of colleagues at every level -- from your own team to C-suite and Board members. You're a clear communicator who brings insight, challenge, and balance, helping to turn assurance into action. With a passion for innovation and digital transformation, you're confident using AI, analytics, and automation to bring data-driven insights to life. Above all, you bring a forward-looking mindset, using your expertise to shape the future of internal audit and help Network Rail continue to deliver safely, efficiently, and with integrity.
