Working under the direction of the Head of Audit and Risk, we are seeking to appoint a trainee internal auditor who will be supported in completing professional qualifications with the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors. You will assist in the provision of an efficient, effective and independent internal audit service, providing assurance to internal and external stakeholders, the Chief Constable and the Section 151 Officer, as to the adequacy of the force's governance, risk management and internal control processes.

As an internal audit function directly employed by West Yorkshire Police, we have a strong profile within the organisation and across the Yorkshire and the Humber (YatH) Region, providing audit services to West Yorkshire Police and the National Police Air Service (NPAS).

Audit work undertaken is risk based and highly varied in nature, with a strong focus on auditing operational policing areas. You will carry out a range of audit tasks, under direction and full supervision, using various audit techniques, which could include assisting the force in improving the quality of investigations, considering whether police use of force is appropriate, or assessing the management of risk within specialist policing departments such as Protective Services Crime or Operational Support. The work assigned will increase in complexity as you progress through levels 1 to 5 of the career progression scheme.

We are looking for an individual who is highly numerate, with a methodical and analytical approach to work, and excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will have an awareness and understanding of the internal audit function and its purpose.

Candidates will be either: degree qualified; have at least two years internal audit experience, plus A levels; or have at least four years internal audit experience, plus GCSEs.

In addition, you must be prepared to work flexibly to suit the requirements of the department and have the ability and willingness to travel for business purposes.

You will need to be focused, committed, and organised as a trainee to balance your study and work requirements. You will be provided with some study leave to help you complete your professional qualification, but study in your own time will be required. Once completed, and to progress to Level 5 of the career progression scheme, the organisation will facilitate your completion of the Chartered Internal Auditor (CMIIA) qualification. Please be advised that if you are not qualified to degree level you may not be eligible to enrol on the CIA qualification immediately.
