Technology is what keeps our trains running on time, our stations connected, and our colleagues supported. Behind every journey, there's a team making sure our systems are secure, reliable, and ready to handle whatever comes their way.
As a Server and Application Engineer at Northern, you'll play a key part in keeping our digital backbone strong. From designing and maintaining server infrastructure to making sure business-critical applications run smoothly, you'll be the go-to person for solving challenges and keeping things moving.
What you'll be doing
Deploying, configuring, and maintaining Windows and Linux servers, both physical and virtual.
Managing Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, Intune Entra and other core services.
Supporting and maintaining enterprise applications like ERP, CRM, and bespoke systems.
Working with vendors and colleagues to deliver upgrades, troubleshoot issues, and keep data flowing securely.
Administering virtualisation platforms such as VMware, and supporting cloud services including Microsoft 365, Azure, and AWS.
Helping shape our hybrid cloud journey with migration and infrastructure projects.
Keeping security tight with regular patching, monitoring, backups, and compliance support.
Documenting processes clearly and looking for ways to make things smarter, faster, and more efficient.
You know your way around complex IT environments - from on-prem servers to the cloud. You're confident bringing structure, security, and stability to the systems that keep a business running.
Here's what you'll bring:
Experience working in a hybrid setup, combining on-prem and Azure environments.
Real-world know-how with cloud technologies such as Microsoft 365, Azure, and Entra.
Hands-on experience with end-user computing (EUC) administration through Intune.
Proven VMware administration experience within an enterprise environment.
Incident management skills, ideally gained in an ITIL-based framework.
A strong understanding of cyber frameworks like ISO and Cyber Essentials - and how to work effectively within them.
The ability to take initiative, work independently, and contribute to a high-performing team.
A can-do attitude, willing to go the extra mile and bring the best version of yourself to Northern every day.
It would be great (but not essential) if you also have:
Azure certifications such as Fundamentals or Administration.
Microsoft 365 certification.
Experience working with Cyber Essentials controls and governance.
SME or lived experience that gives you a broader perspective and insight into how people use technology.

Why Northern?
We're more than just a train operator. We're the heartbeat of the North - connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,500 trains running daily, we're on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.
Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, after which rail quickly spread across the globe - and this year, we're celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.
A place for everyone
The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.
At Northern, we don't just move people from A to B - we're building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that's something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we'll always offer an interview.
We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.
No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob... there's a place for you here in the railway.
