Role overview:



Tes Magazine is looking for a junior news reporter to join its award-winning team.

The magazine (formerly Times Educational Supplement) has been leading on education news in the UK for 115 years, supporting schools and holding policy-makers to account.

We're seeking an ambitious news journalist who's passionate about public policy and/or education, and has a talent for finding original angles for hard-hitting scoops and agenda-setting investigations.

In this role, you'll deliver exclusives across a range of regional and national patches by honing contacts, scrutinising data and asking probing questions.

You'll work towards appearing in the wider media to discuss education stories, and receive the support you need to become a top-flight reporter.

Please note:

this role is focused on news writing (including long-reads and investigations) and is not suitable for candidates who wish to focus on features.



Key Responsibilities:



Source and write exclusive news stories, long-reads, and investigations for Tes Magazine Develop contacts and leads across national and regional education networks Interrogate education datasets and use FOI requests to identify stories Represent Tes in the wider media on key education issues Collaborate with colleagues to shape coverage priorities Uphold journalistic standards and accuracy in reporting

What will you need to succeed?

NCTJ qualification or equivalent (ideally with 100wpm shorthand) Strong news sense and a passion for public policy and/or education Evidence of tenacity and ambition in pursuing original stories Ability to analyse data and spot trends Published work demonstrating journalism skills Excellent written and verbal communication skills Confidence and professionalism in working with high-level sources
