Why This Role Matters
The Junior Specialist/Cataloguer plays a vital role in the preparation and execution of auctions and private sales within the Antiquities department. This position supports the department's specialists in researching, cataloguing, and coordinating the presentation of works of art, with a focus on scholarly accuracy, market relevance, and operational efficiency.
How You'll Make an Impact
Research & CataloguingConduct in-depth research on provenance, bibliography, and exhibition history using internal databases, libraries, and external experts.
Write and proof catalogue entries and essays in line with Christie's standards.
Prepare condition reports and liaise with specialists to vet property for authenticity and marketability.
Auction & Sale PreparationCoordinate photography and restoration schedules.
Assist in the layout and production of auction catalogues.
Support pre-sale exhibition setup and client engagement during preview and sale weeks.
Participate in hilling sessions and amend catalogue entries accordingly
Client & Departmental SupportRespond to client enquiries and provide documentation as needed.
Maintain departmental research materials and sale archives.
Liaise with internal teams (e.g. Marketing, Legal, Prepress) to ensure compliance and consistency.
Due Diligence & ComplianceEnsure all cataloguing meets the standards required under EU Regulation 2019/880 for the import of cultural goods.
Update internal provenance paperwork runners/ spreadsheets and present provenance queries to Legal department.
Flag any provenance or authenticity concerns promptly and escalate as appropriate.
What you'll bring to the teamA degree in Archaeology, Classics, Art History, or a related field with a focus on Antiquities.
1-3 years of experience in an auction house, museum, or academic setting preferred.
Excellent research and writing skills, with the ability to balance scholarly rigour and commercial awareness.
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with Christie's systems (COS, JDE, OneDrive, Tableau) is a plus.
A collaborative mindset and willingness to support colleagues across levels and departments.
