Job Description

We're seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Kitchen Assistant / Cafe Assistant to join our friendly cafe team at Shallowmead Nurseries. Whether you're currently a cook looking for more sociable hours, or someone with food preparation experience ready to step up, this is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a positive, welcoming kitchen.

Often you'll be supporting the Head Chef in preparing and cooking food to a high standard, helping maintain smooth daily service, and contributing to the kitchen's organisation and cleanliness, although there may be days when you'll need to work under your own initiative. You'll also be helping front of house when required, servicing customers and clearing tables.

Your Role

Cooking & Prep

Prepare and cook a range of hot and cold dishes. Maintain high standards of presentation and food quality. Support with daily kitchen duties including prep lists, stock handling, and food storage.

Cleanliness & Food Safety

Maintain kitchen hygiene to meet all food safety regulations. Follow procedures for cleaning, checking, food storage, and allergen awareness.

Front of House

Assist servicing customers, making drinks, and clearing tables.

Teamwork & Service

Work collaboratively with kitchen and front-of-house colleagues to ensure efficient, friendly service. Adapt to busy periods with flexibility and a positive approach.

What You'll Bring

Experience in a professional kitchen environment is preferred but not essential, confidence and enthusiasm go a long way! Able to cook and prep food safely and efficiently. Strong team ethic and a willingness to contribute. Understanding of food hygiene and safety practices (Level 2 certification is a plus, training can be provided). Reliable and punctual, with a calm approach under pressure.
