Job Purpose
To support the kitchen team in preparing and serving nutritious, well-presented meals in a clean and hygienic environment. The Kitchen Assistant plays a vital role in helping to meet the dietary needs of residents while maintaining high standards of cleanliness and food safety.
Key Responsibilities
Food Preparation and Service
Assist with the basic preparation of food items (e.g., vegetables, sandwiches, desserts) under the direction of the Cook or Chef.
Support with plating and serving meals in the kitchen and/or dining area as required.
Prepare snacks and beverages for residents, ensuring individual dietary requirements are respected.
Kitchen Hygiene and Safety
Maintain cleanliness of kitchen surfaces, equipment, and utensils in line with infection control and food hygiene standards.
Wash dishes, pots, pans, and cutlery using appropriate cleaning methods and machinery.
Dispose of food waste and rubbish appropriately and in line with the home's procedures.
Health and Safety
Adhere to food safety standards, including HACCP, and maintain appropriate temperature records for fridges, freezers, and food items.
Follow COSHH guidelines for cleaning products and use PPE as required.
Report any faulty equipment, hazards, or concerns to the Cook or Home Manager.
Teamwork and Communication
Work collaboratively with kitchen staff, care staff, and other departments to support smooth meal service.
Communicate effectively with residents when appropriate, respecting dignity and preferences.
Attend training and meetings as required to support continuous improvement and compliance.
Person Specification
Essential:
Reliable, hard-working, and able to work in a fast-paced environment
Understanding of basic food hygiene and kitchen safety
Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team
Respectful and caring attitude towards older people
Desirable:
Previous experience in a kitchen or food service environment
Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate (or willingness to complete)
Experience working in a care home or healthcare setting
Knowledge of special diets (e.g. diabetic, IDDSI modified diets)
