SRUC Veterinary Services provides disease surveillance and analytical testing via our Veterinary and Analytical Laboratory and our network of disease surveillance hubs situated throughout Scotland. We provide national veterinary disease surveillance for the Scottish Government and collaborate with APHA to support statutory disease control schemes.
Our Veterinary Services team are experts in animal disease diagnosis, and we process over one million animal and material samples each year. Close links with research and development activities within SRUC and in several other academic and research institutions ensure that our UK, EU and international clients benefit from practical support coupled with expert scientific advice.
Our suite of services supports clients like vets, farmers and pharmaceutical companies by providing diagnostic testing for farm livestock and companion animals, as well as livestock health schemes, livestock health planning, veterinary CPD courses and external quality assessment schemes.
About the opportunity:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Laboratory Scientist with a background in Serology to join SRUC's Veterinary Services team. Based at the Central Analytical Laboratory within the Pentland Science Park, this role plays a key part in delivering high-quality diagnostic services to support animal health and welfare. The main purpose of the role is the testing of samples submitted for serological analysis using ELISA.
Key Responsibilities:
Prepare and test ruminant blood, tissue, and faecal samples, primarily using ELISA techniques
Maintain general laboratory housekeeping standards
Review and interpret quality control data
Report results accurately using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
Perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment
Assist with the selection and procurement of laboratory equipment and consumables
Support staff training and supervision, and deputise for the Senior
Laboratory Scientist when required
Contribute to maintaining UKAS accreditation through participation in internal and external quality assessments
Promote and comply with health and safety procedures, helping to foster a strong safety culture within the lab

Minimum qualifications and experience:
This role requires the postholder to be qualified to SCQF Level 9, with a Degree (or equivalent qualification) in Biological Science, or a related discipline.
