Job Description

Full time Laboratory Scientist / Technician required to work in the sample processing department in a busy ISO 17025 accredited food, water, and environmental microbiology laboratory based in Bournemouth (Wallisdown area).

The candidate should ideally have previous experience working in a UKAS-accredited laboratory, although full training will be given to the right candidate who holds a biological science degree or similar qualification and looking to work in the field of microbiology.

Collaborate with scientists and support personnel to meet the requirements of the lab.

Obtain a working knowledge

of

the equipment and SOPs used in the laboratory and how to implement them to perform the necessary duties.

Booking in samples and labelling culture media in preparation for testing.

Processing samples using a variety of techniques and incubation of test media.

Assisting with project work as required.

Adhering to Good Laboratory Practice and capable of excellent aseptic techniques.

Maintaining the cleanliness and tidiness of the laboratory.

Understand the need for GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) particularly client confidentiality.

Other duties may be assigned to the role when necessary as we are a dynamic laboratory that tests a wide variety of samples.

Preferably educated to degree level with experience working within a lab-based setting.

Works to a high standard with careful attention to detail.

Can work methodically under own initiative and in collaboration with others.

Is able to work under pressure and have good organisational skills

Willingness to learn and improve performance through feedback with the potentiality of progression within the laboratory.

Good communication skills both verbally and in writing; good numeracy also required.

Available to work weekends (usually 1 in 4 weekends required, 2-6 hours each day).

Working hours are flexible but are generally from 9am to 5pm depending on the time of arrival and quantity of samples received. Overtime will be paid to the nearest quarter hour. Annual leave 24 days + bank holidays.

Rate of pay depends on skills, experience & qualifications, minimum starting pay 13.00 per hour. Higher rates paid for weekend and public holiday work.
