Objective of the role:
Accepting, sorting, segregating and despatching Laboratory Small waste and associated materials. Working along with the incoming and outgoing chemist teams to ensure that the acceptance and despatch of wastes is Safe, compliant and efficient.
Main Duties:
Accept incoming waste streams in accordance with the company management system, relevant legislation, and industry guidance.
Ensure waste is stored appropriately following Sector Guidance Note 5.06, the site's Environmental Permit, and HSG51 (The Storage of Flammable Liquids in Containers) and HSG71 (Chemical Warehousing: The Storage of Packaged Dangerous Substances).
Verify that laboratory smalls are correctly listed in overpacks, maintaining records for future reference and disposal.
Conduct a physical count of all stored pallets of waste on site every Monday morning to maintain stock levels below 75% capacity in line with KPI targets.
Sample accepted waste for analysis by the internal laboratory or suppliers to confirm suitability for acceptance.
Accurately list waste stock and batch on SAP; collaborate with operatives to prepare waste for dispatch.
Utilise SAP to batch waste, ensuring stock listings are accurate, generate stock value reports at required intervals, and perform stock reconciliations as needed.
Maintain outgoing records, filing, and duty of care documentation.
Liaise with suppliers to negotiate the most cost-effective disposal rates to maximise profitability.
Generate outgoing paperwork, book loads, and issue purchase orders for dispatch.
Complete Gross Margin Analysis for each outgoing load to assess revenue against supplier costs; this data supports KPIs monitored by the Stock Control Manager.
Support the Dispatch Manager by providing information for monthly KPI meetings.
Provide feedback to the Technical Department regarding problematic wastes or potential commercial issues related to waste pricing and disposal.
Coordinate with the Logistics Team to confirm transport disposal dates and manage cancellations, optimising transport fleet utilisation.
Build and maintain strong relationships with outgoing treatment and disposal contractors.
Ensure all paperwork for hazardous and non-hazardous waste dispatches is accurately completed and passed to the Stock Control Administrator for filing.
Cover the duties of the Stock Control Administrator during their absence.
Manage Non-Conformance Report (NCR) resolution, provide feedback, and communicate with relevant stakeholders to ensure operational NCRs are completed within agreed KPI timeframes.
Liaise effectively across all site teams to manage quarantined waste items, verify their suitability for disposal routes, communicate requirements, and ensure all information is properly documented to support sound decision-making.
Undertake additional duties as requested by senior management within the scope of the role.
Support and contribute to the overall objectives and aims of the Red Industries Group, aligned with the role holder's experience and competence.
Promote and uphold high standards of health and safety, maintaining daily awareness of safety issues and wellbeing.
Take full responsibility for personal health and safety and that of others.
Report all incidents, observations, and concerns through the company's escalation process; assist in identifying solutions and implementing actions in line with company policy.
Encourage and contribute ideas for safety improvements, involving Health and Safety representatives and HR management as appropriate.
Ensure non-Red employees (visitors, contractors, third parties) comply with Health and Safety policies, including the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Raise Corrective Action Reports (CARs) for any concerns or improvement opportunities.
Comply with energy-saving initiatives such as switching off unused lights and equipment, setting thermostats correctly, and managing water and heating efficiently.
Support water conservation by properly turning off taps, reporting leaks, and promoting economical water use.
Adhere to pollution reduction efforts by minimising waste, recycling where possible, and following COSHH guidelines for chemical handling and spill response.
Comply with company emissions goals by driving company vehicles economically, using the shortest routes, maintaining vehicles, and driving safely and within speed limits.
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills:
HNC or Degree-level qualification in Chemistry, or a related discipline.
Dedicated and professional approach to work.
Excellent attention to detail.
Experience within the Hazardous Waste sector.
Strong organisational skills.
Sound knowledge of Hazardous Waste Regulations.
Effective communication skills with the ability to liaise well with others.
Familiarity with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team, contributing to overall success.
Experience working in compliance with HSG51 (The Storage of Flammable Liquids in Containers) and HSG71 (Chemical Warehousing: The Storage of Packaged Dangerous Substances).
