Location: Cambridge, CB24 9NZ

Working hours: 37 hours per week, Monday-Friday; part-time considered minimum 30 hours

ABOUT THE JOB

We are looking to recruit a Laboratory Technician to join our friendly team undertaking seed-health diagnostics and plant variety identification for the agricultural industry.

As a Laboratory Technician, your key duties include:

  • Registration of seed samples
  • Preparation of samples for testing
  • Carry out a wide range of diagnostic techniques for seed, plant and soil pathogens, including microscopy, molecular biology, GC and HPLC.
  • Regular use of laboratory equipment.
  • Regular exposure to seeds, plant material and plant pathogens.
  • Manual handling - occasional handling items of up to 25kg e.g. potato sacks.
  • Occasional exposure to dust e.g. soil particles, from milled seeds.
  • Possible occasional exposure to chemicals e.g. those used to treat seeds.
Location

The role is based at NIAB Park Farm, Histon, Cambridge, CB24 9NZ, 4 miles from Cambridge city centre. Free on-site parking and linked by cycle ways and regular buses to Cambridge city centre and railway station. Close to Junction 32 of A14, with easy access to M11, A10 and A11.

ABOUT YOU

Essential requirements

Ideally you have:
  • A levels including biology
  • Laboratory experience
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and work to deadlines, even when under pressure
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Flexibility - able to work alone and as part of a small team
  • Willingness to learn new skills
Desirable requirements

Ideally you will also have:
  • Some basic knowledge of agriculture or plant science
  • Flexibility - able to work alone and as part of a small team
  • Confidence about working without direct supervision
