to support production by carrying out routine and investigative testing on oils and process samples in a busy industrial environment. This is a hands-on role where accurate results and clear communication directly support safe, consistent plant operation, and ensuring all incoming and outgoing product are to the required standards.
You will be asked to take samples around the plant and off incoming road tankers from a top dip so be able and be ok at working at height.
Key Responsibilities
Collect, label, and manage routine and ad-hoc
process and product samples
Carry out laboratory testing including:
Gas Chromatography (GC)
XRF
(sulfur/metals where applicable)
FTIR
(fingerprinting / contamination indicators)
Karl Fischer
(water content)
Viscometry
Maintain calibration checks, basic troubleshooting, and routine upkeep of lab equipment
Record results accurately, maintain trends, and flag out-of-spec results immediately
Support investigations into process upsets / quality deviations with repeat testing and clear reporting
Complete routine
cooling tower water checks
(e.g., basic water quality monitoring as per site procedure) and record results/action points
Maintain good housekeeping, chemical storage discipline, and sample retention where required
Work closely with operators and the Plant Manager to communicate results and priorities
What We're Looking For
Essential:
Lab/QC experience in a process, fuels, oils, chemical, or manufacturing environment
Confident running and recording results from at least some of the following:
GC, XRF, FTIR, Karl Fischer, viscometry
Strong attention to detail, good documentation, and a "right-first-time" approach
Comfortable working around an industrial plant environment and following strict safety procedures
Desirable:
Experience with used oils, base oils, fuels, blending, or refinery operations
Water testing experience (cooling towers / closed-loop systems)
Experience creating simple test reports/trends (Excel or similar)
Safety & PPE
Industrial site PPE required:
hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe cap boots, and hi-vis
