The Labourer (Intumescent Paint Works) assists in the preparation, application, and finishing of intumescent fireproof coatings on structural steel and other surfaces. Responsibilities include surface preparation (cleaning, sanding, masking), mixing and handling paint materials, maintaining a clean and safe work area, and supporting painters and supervisors to ensure projects are completed to specification and safety standards. The role requires attention to detail, adherence to health and safety procedures, and the ability to work efficiently within a team on construction or industrial sites.
Duties
Assist in the preparation of surfaces for intumescent paint application, including cleaning, degreasing, sanding, and masking.
Mix and handle intumescent coatings and related materials as directed by the applicator or supervisor.
Transport, organize, and maintain painting tools, equipment, and materials on site.
Support applicators during spraying or brushing operations, including setting up and dismantling work areas.
Ensure work areas are kept clean, tidy, and safe throughout the project.
Assist with scaffolding, access platforms, or containment setup where required.
Conduct basic quality checks (e.g., film thickness measurements) under supervision.
Follow all site safety rules, use proper PPE, and report any hazards or incidents immediately.
Dispose of waste materials safely and in compliance with environmental guidelines.
Perform other general labouring duties as required to support the painting team and site operations.
Experience
Previous experience working on construction or industrial painting projects (preferably with intumescent or protective coatings).
Basic knowledge of surface preparation methods and painting processes.
Familiarity with handling paints, thinners, and related materials safely.
Experience using hand and power tools such as grinders, sanders, and spray equipment (under supervision).
Understanding of site health and safety practices, including PPE use and safe material handling.
Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
Physically fit and capable of performing manual labour in varying site conditions.
Valid CSCS card or equivalent site safety certification (preferred).
Confined space, working at height, or abrasive blasting certifications (advantageous but not essential).
