The Role
As a
Lawyer in Litigation and Licensing
, you will play a vital role in supporting Halton Borough Council with expert legal advice and advocacy. You will be instrumental in protecting the Council's interests while delivering high-quality legal services.
Key responsibilities include:
Leading criminal and civil litigation, representing the Council in courts, tribunals, and statutory appeals
Providing clear and strategic legal advice to Council directorates, ensuring sound decision-making
Conducting prosecutions in magistrates' courts, supporting legal action on behalf of the Council
Advising on regulatory law, licensing issues, and enforcement matters
Researching legal developments to ensure the Council remains compliant and proactive
Delivering training to Members, Officers, and Legal Services staff, contributing to professional development
Representing the Council in committees, panels, and public hearings
Collaborating with partner organisations and stakeholders to enhance service provision
Assisting in the development of practice standards within Legal Services
Providing legal support across different areas when needed

About You
To excel in this position, you will need:
A recognised legal qualification as a
Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive
Experience in
criminal and civil advocacy
Knowledge of one or more areas of law, including planning, highways, environmental, consumer protection, licensing, or regulatory enforcement
Preferably, experience advising Officers, Committees, and Members in a local government setting
Strong negotiation, advocacy, and communication skills
A proactive approach to problem-solving and legal service delivery
The ability to build excellent relationships with clients and colleagues
A commitment to continuous learning and professional development
Advanced IT proficiency, including expertise in legal and business software
Since this role requires regular travel within the borough and beyond, a valid
UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
are essential.
