Main Accountabilities



Working collaboratively with the Lead Academy Physiotherapist and in alignment with the Club's vision of being admired as the most caring and progressive Academy in the world - lead and develop the Academy Medical Department, ensuring delivery of high-quality, player-centred care at all age phases. Oversee compliance with EPL and EPPP medical screening standards across all age groups. Champion clinical excellence, fostering evidence-based practice in line with Premier League requirements. Provide senior clinical oversight for injury assessment, diagnosis, onward referral, and treatment within the Academy. In conjunction with the Head of Academy Medicine and Sports Science, establish best-practice Standard Operating Procedures and Policies that reflect the Academy's Caring and Progressive vision. Maintain accurate, detailed medical records and uphold the highest GMC standards. Act as the primary decision-maker for developing and updating Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) across all Academy sites. Lead the Clinical Governance Group on adverse event management, anti-doping education, and compliance with governance guidelines. Alongside the Lead Academy Physiotherapist, act as the medical point of contacts with internal stakeholders and ensure medical input into interdisciplinary player development processes. Working collaboratively with the Lead Academy Psychologist, lead wellbeing, mental health, and performance enhancement initiatives for players. To ensure that any concerns you observe, or are raised with you in your role, are shared with the Safeguarding Team through appropriate channels.

Daily Provision



Supervise and coordinate player review clinics, screenings, and assessments (pre-signing, pre-season, ongoing). Allocate and direct medical staff for training sessions and matches across all squads. Oversee departmental CPD and emergency skills training, including on-field trauma scenario practice. Continually review clinical protocols and ensure operational readiness of all equipment and medication.

Match Cover



Organise and assign medical cover for all Academy fixtures, acting as Lead Doctor at key matches and high-profile events. Ensure robust emergency medical provision is in place for all fixtures, home and away. Oversee medical planning and execution of Emergency Action plans (EAPs) at all venues.

Academy - Offsite Cover



Set standards and processes for offsite/remote clinical assessment and ongoing care for Academy players, supporting staff as necessary. Provide expert consultation for parents and players regarding illness, injury, and wellbeing. Working in conjunction with the Head of Academy Medicine and Sports Science, conduct the risk-management for all Academy travel, tours and off-site activities.

Person Specification - Essential Personal Characteristics



Full GMC registration (UK Medical Licence to Practise) Diploma/MSc (or international equivalent) in Sport & Exercise Medicine Level 5 ATMMiF or equivalent emergency trauma qualification Membership of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine (MFSEM) Eligible for sufficient Professional Liability Insurance (e.g., SEMPRIS) Demonstrable experience in professional team sport medicine (preferably in football) Understanding of the epidemiology, prevention, and management of football injuries and re-injuries Demonstrable experience working proactively with adolescent athletes Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and reasoning skills Up-to-date knowledge of football-related injury patterns, treatments, and rehabilitation Solid understanding of imaging and radiology protocols and clinical interpretation Awareness of anti-doping, safeguarding, and medicolegal responsibilities High standards of confidentiality and clinical governance Strong organisational and time management skills Commitment to CPD (continuing professional development) as per FA/GMC guidelines Excellent communication in English (written and oral) Reliable, trustworthy, and highly self-motivated Innovative, proactive, and forward-thinking Resilient, adaptable, and able to maintain high performance standards under pressure

Person Specification - Desirable Characteristics



Consultant in Sport & Exercise Medicine (CCT or CESR) Fellowship of the Faculty of Sports & Exercise Medicine (FFSEM) Postgraduate memberships (e.g. MRCP, MCEM, MRCGP, MRCS) Qualifications in Medical Education, Clinical Supervision, or teaching Qualification in MSK Ultrasonography and/or injection therapy Previous experience as a Lead or Consultant in elite football academy or professional sport settings Involvement in research or publications relating to sports or football medicine Experience designing or delivering athlete wellbeing or mental health programmes Leadership in development or implementation of medical policy or protocols Knowledge of performance science, load management, or sports technology systems Multilingual skills, especially in languages commonly spoken in football communities Advanced IT and data management proficiency Background or special interest in adolescent development or paediatric sports medicine
