An overview of the role





We're looking for a Lead Data Science Engineer to join and help shape our Data Team. This is a hands-on technical leadership role where you'll take ownership of the design and implementation of our unified data platform and DaaS offerings. You'll work closely with data engineers, data scientists, architects, and business stakeholders to deliver scalable, high-impact data solutions that support both internal teams and external clients.



Please note, this is a hybrid role requiring in-office attendance at our Winchester or Worcester office twice a week, therefore we are looking initally for candidates who live within a 50 mile radius of one of these offices.







Your key responsibilities





Lead the design and delivery of scalable data infrastructure and pipelines to support machine learning, analytics, and data product development. Champion the development and rollout of Data-as-a-Service (DaaS) offerings, including APIs and secure data delivery mechanisms. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business needs into robust data and ML solutions. Foster a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement. Oversee the productionisation of machine learning models and their integration into live systems and client-facing applications. Support data governance, quality, and compliance standards across the platform. Stay on top of emerging technologies and trends in data science engineering, identifying opportunities for innovation.

Qualifications





Advanced degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field.

Experience



Essential



Significant experience as a Data Science Engineer, Machine Learning Engineer, or hybrid Data/ML Engineer, including time spent in a lead or senior role. Strong programming skills in Python with excellent SQL proficiency. Experience building and scaling data platforms in cloud environments (Ideally Azure). Proficiency with modern data and ML engineering tools (e.g., Postgres, Langchain, Ollama, Polars, Unix tools, Systemd services, gitlab CI/CD). Demonstrated success deploying ML models into production at scale and managing their lifecycle. Experience delivering Self Serve Reporting & Analytics Solutions or building data APIs for consumption by other services or customers. Solid grasp of data security, privacy (e.g., GDPR), and governance best practices. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Advantageous



Experience with containerization and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) is a plus. Background in insurance or financial services is a strong plus. Infrastructure as code (e.g., ansible)
