We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join a premier team of Firefighters at the Royal Air Force (RAF) Menwith, United Kingdom.
What will be your primary role?
The primary purpose of this position is to serve as Lead Firefighter responsible for a major piece of firefighting equipment and its regularly assigned crew of three or more firefighters engaged in structural firefighting and rescue operations and the reduction and/or elimination of potential fire hazards. You will lead a crew of three or more firefighters, including at least one firefighter assigned to man a major piece of motorized firefighting equipment such as a pumper truck in firefighting and rescue operations and direct firefighting crew in the operation of firefighting vehicles and equipment. You will be responsible for directing assigned crew in the performance of structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities which may include research and/or large industrial complexes, and the performance of hazardous materials operations, containment and control and/or Basic Life Support duties. You will lead assigned crew and perform rescue of personnel and performs at the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician level. In addition, you will comply with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures and perform work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment and assign crew members to perform maintenance of firefighting equipment and fire station facilities.

What are the Key Skills required for this role?
1. Knowledge to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity; of the principles of hydraulics as they pertain to water flow, water pressure, water levels, line (friction) losses, etc.; and of basic and specialized firefighting equipment (fire alarm system operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, etc.), techniques, and procedures.
2. Knowledge of emergency first aid techniques; safety requirements as outlined in applicable
safety standards, regulations, and/or technical orders; and HAZMAT emergency response procedures, equipment, and identification.
3. Knowledge of basic building design, construction, and occupancy.
4. Skill in detecting and recognizing fire hazards (potential and immediate), and in operating communications equipment.
5. Ability to maintain good working relations; communicate orally and in writing; and lift and carry heavy loads.
6. Ability to provide leadership and integrate the actions of a crew under emergency conditions.
Required to be certified by the Department of Defense Firefighter Certification System as Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, Firefighter II, HAZMAT Awareness, HAZMAT Operations, and Hazmat Technician within 24 months of being appointed to the position.
*Required to be certified to the Telecommunicator I/II, Rescue Technician level after initial certification listed above.
*Will attend any other formal and/or correspondence courses as required and determined by guidelines and the Fire Chief. Failure or inability to obtain the required certification within the 24 month period due to your negligence will result in separation from the position. If failure to obtain required certifications is due to circumstances outside your control, management will work with you to satisfy the requirements in a mutually agree upon timeframe.
What are the conditions of employment for this role?
1. You will be required to handle and safeguard sensitive information in accordance with applicable US and UK laws, rules and regulations.
2. You may be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft, and you may also be required to travel to the US or other country, in the performance of official duties or attend necessary training.
3. You will be required to complete a 12-month probationary period. .
4. You must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
5. You must participate in a mandatory physical fitness program and are required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management. Will be required to wear NFPA compliant uniforms.
6. This position is considered operational; you are entitled to receive Operational Firefighter Pay Supplement for working an approved USAFE "as rostered" shift pattern. The shift pattern will total 192 hours every month, comprised of 24-hour shifts generally 48-hour work weeks, which may include weekends and public holidays. Management will assign work schedule based on needs of organization. Incumbent will be subject to recall.
7. This position requires you to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.
8. The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license (category C) is required.
9. You must be able to operate radio equipment in the station, vehicles and portables and will be required to work the Emergency Communications Center (ECC).
10. You will obtain and maintain current EMT from certifying body approved by the Fire Chief. The fire department will facilitate the necessary training dates to accomplish certification once hired.
11. You will have an annual occupational medical examination to include having blood tests. Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth.
12. The position may require uncommon tours of duty during exercise or real-world crises or contingencies.
13. You must be able to obtain and maintain an enhanced DV clearance in order to fully perform duties and responsibilities of this position.
14. You may be assigned other duties not described in this position description, but that are appropriate to the grade and skill set of the incumbent.
15. You will be designated as a mission essential employee for reduced operations during inclement weather and will be required to report for work as scheduled.
16. You may be required to work overtime to include during exercise or real-world emergency operations.
17. This position is designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force civilian drug testing program. As a mandatory requirement for employment in this TDP, the incumbent is to refrain from the use of illegal drugs and if required, submit to urinalysis testing. You must sign statements acknowledging the position is identified as a TDP.
18. Special Retirement Provisions Authority: This is a Primary operations position; UK retirement rules apply.
