As a Lead Functional Integration Engineer

at HS2 you will be responsible for defining the overall process for delivering system functionality, within the overall systems integration framework, working progressively towards the end state railway. The role undertakes technical analysis for functional integration of the HS2 railway, this includes ensuring end-to-end delivery of the required functions in accordance with HS2 Plans and Processes as well as Best Practice methodology.



About the role:



Works as a member of the Capability and Functional Integration department within the HS2 Systems Integration department. Provides timely information on the progress of own work, and other team members, able to anticipate risks and issue, progress against plans, metrics and KPI's as appropriate to the type of work. Lead the delivery of HS2 Functional Integration work-stream to ensure the HS2 railway will deliver the required end-state railway functionalities for passengers, operators, and public whilst ensuring the technical deliverables achieve the right quality, along with supporting the project manager to deliver to time and to budget. Define and own the functional integration process (as part of an overall systems integration framework) which enables and tracks the delivery of functionality as a part of the HS2 railway specification and delivery. Define and lead the engagement and consultation with internal HS2 teams (i.e. operations and maintenance, railway systems, rolling stock, stations, civil engineering) and external suppliers / stakeholders (e.g. Network Rail) who are required to contribute to the successful implementation of the functional integration process. Define and own the systematic analysis approach of the operations and maintenance concept to define the functionality of the HS2 railway in terms of sub-system requirements, system architecture, interfaces, and holistic technical solutions. Undertakes a variety of systems engineering work for functional integration as a subject area, making appropriate use of systems engineering tools, in particular system architecture, interface management and requirements management approaches. Provides systems engineering technical support relating to the functional integration of multiple technical sub-systems. Ensures that functionality is instructed to sub-system delivery contracts, and subsequently engages the supply chain in the monitoring, review and assurance of the holistic technical solutions that are being delivered from design through to testing and commissioning. Ensures that safety, ergonomics, and human factors are fully considered in the functional integration process. Identifies Risks and Opportunities during the development of HS2 functionalities and can propose innovative and integrated solutions to resolve identified risks. Supports technical assurance of the functional design during delivery phases of the railway in accordance with standards and technical requirements and where needed support in resolving issues in accordance with HS2 Governance Procedures. Supports subject matter experts in the development of requirements, specifications, and standards for functional Integration such that they meet HS2 operations and maintenance concepts. Use of best practice systems engineering techniques, technologies, and processes, driving consistency, and helping to identify opportunities for efficiencies across HS2. About You:



Skills


Ability to provide specialist technical direction and leadership on systems functional integration to project development / delivery teams. Provides systems engineering technical support in defining how the sub-systems of the railway combine to deliver the required functionality. Capable of being a Standard Discipline Owner / Subject Matter Expert in specification and delivery of functionality. Able to support project development / delivery teams with specialist technical and commercial management issues. Ability to communicate most discipline-specific technical ideas to colleagues, based largely on examples of application. Ability to apply principles relating to standards, safety, and the environment and able to articulate these to a wide range of senior stakeholders. Ability to use appropriate model-based tools for systems engineering processes. Ability to apply principles and methods that ensure effective information management, modelling and data security; understands the approaches and consequences to data creation, transformation and visualisation and knowing when to seek guidance from other Subject Matter Experts.
Knowledge


Understanding of railway operations and maintenance and engineered sub systems (i.e. railway systems, rolling stock, stations in particular) and how they typically integrate and interface to deliver functionality for the end users. Ability to apply appropriate systems engineering technics whilst integrating with other specialist disciplines, such as interface management, requirements/V&V management, system assurance, configuration management. Ability to use appropriate model based systems engineering tools (i.e. DOORS, Enterprise Architect, interface management tools, design tools etc) Ability to support system safety and the application of the Common Safety Method (CSM) for risk evaluation and assessment. Understanding of the Regulatory/Legislative Framework relevant to railways. Chartered Engineer/Membership of an appropriate professional institution or demonstration of the equivalent professional experience. Commercial awareness including understanding of cost delivery, schedule targets and the need to deliver an integrated solution that meets all functional requirements
Experience


Experience of working as a senior member of a systems engineering/integration, displaying excellent teamwork in a complex multi-disciplinary, safety critical railway engineering environment. Experience of the integration operations and maintenance requirements into multiple interfacing engineered sub-systems e.g. the interface of rolling stock on[1]board equipment with line-side equipment to delivery desired operational outcomes. Experience of advising on competing operational and engineering requirements coupled with the demands of cost and schedule implications.
