Role Overview
We're seeking a dynamic and experienced Lead Systems Engineer to own the systems engineering strategy across one or more critical programmes. You will define and guide architecture, integration, and verification activities across all technical domains--ensuring that systems-level thinking drives high-integrity delivery from concept through to operation.
In this role, you'll act as the primary technical authority across systems teams, interfacing with programme leadership, external stakeholders, and regulatory bodies. You will lead technical governance, shape delivery strategies, and support the development of engineering capability across the organisation.
Responsibilities will include:
Define and own the system architecture, integration strategy, and technical assurance approach across the full platform.
Lead systems engineering activities from concept development through delivery, qualification, and in-service support.
Oversee the decomposition and traceability of top-level requirements into subsystem specifications and verification plans.
Act as the technical authority on system-level decisions, risk management, and trade-offs.
Chair technical reviews and ensure engineering governance is applied consistently across delivery teams.
Engage directly with customers, regulators, and partners to align on system-level requirements, compliance, and performance.
Mentor and support systems engineers across programmes, driving discipline development and best practices.
Collaborate with programme and product leaders to shape roadmaps, resolve integration risks, and manage change.
Support technical input to bids, proposals, and new programme mobilisation.
Qualifications and Experience:
Required:
Degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
7+ years' experience in the development and delivery of complex engineering systems, ideally within defence, maritime, aerospace, or other regulated sectors.
Proven experience leading systems engineering across the full lifecycle, including architecture, integration, and V&V.
Expertise in systems thinking, requirements engineering, interface management, and cross-domain integration.
Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement capabilities.
Demonstrated ability to provide technical governance and assurance in multidisciplinary settings.
Desirable:
Experience delivering against maritime class approval or similar regulatory frameworks (e.g. Lloyd's, DNV).
Familiarity with MBSE approaches and tools (e.g. SysML, Cameo, Capella).
Hands-on experience with Jira, Confluence, and digital engineering toolchains.
Background in platform-level integration, resilience design, and staged delivery models (e.g. TRL frameworks).
