JOB OVERVIEW
INSERT JOB DESCRIPTION
Purpose of the role
Lead Teachers are key roles in BSC's vision of 'delivering outstanding and transformational learning experiences'. This role works closely with the College Manager (CM) to support the teaching team and delivery of all academic products in the college, acts as teacher mentor, supporting the CM with regards to CPD and helping out with any necessary admin especially when the CM is on leave. As a member of the college's team, it is expected that in addition to the specified duties, the Lead Teacher will also support the Student Experience Team with the care of the students and clients that visit. As a part of this support; it is also vital to actively foster collaboration amongst the student experience and academic teams.
The duties of the role are outlined below. There may be occasions where the Lead Teacher is asked to undertake other tasks, particularly in quieter periods within the college.
Main Responsibilities as Lead Teacher
Fulfil all teaching roles and responsibilities as listed below
Be one of the pastoral care contacts for the college
Assist the CM with necessary admin and coordination tasks as required for planning, placing and testing, inductions, monitoring resources and more
Assist the CM with teacher meetings, communication workshops, recruitment processes and training
Cover certain CM admin tasks when required, such as when CM is on annual leave or unavailable.
Be trained to use BSC student management systems for classing and scheduling, planning and student progress monitoring
Undergo advanced safeguarding training
Play an active role in the college CPD calendar and observation programme as instructed by the CM
Work closely with the Student Experience Team with regards to student needs, activity programme and inductions
Set the example for the teaching team, acting as mentor for new and inexperienced teachers
Participate fully in all company systems, platforms and processes including Fidelo, Teams, Google Classrooms and any new additions that come along, acting as champion and helping teachers who are struggling
Help in the development of new products and courses for the college and group
Act as an ambassador for the college and group, speaking with external visitors, agents etc. as required
Responsibilities as Teacher
Inside the classroom / Online
Teach a wide range of courses, clubs and workshops to students of all ages and levels in accordance with the set curricula and syllabi, with particular thought to the needs and priorities of the students and in line with college requirements (teaching may be classroom based or online)
Ensure students are aware of course and lesson learning outcomes by planning collaboratively and displaying schemes of work/weekly plans in the classroom
Teach high-quality lessons that are in line with the teacher handbook and accreditation criteria for your teaching level and experience (TEFLQ)
Monitor student progress through formative and summative assessment and adapting materials and lesson content accordingly
Ensure all students receive the designated number of tutorials
Play an active role in BSC's observation programme demonstrating TEFLQ criteria to managers, peers and CELTA trainees
Begin and end classes promptly
Monitor student attendance and communicate to relevant parties
Provide cover for absent teachers as and when required
Outside the classroom
Planning and preparation of lessons in accordance with the set curricula and syllabi, with particular thought to the needs and priorities of the students (including the gathering of resources, photocopying, and setting up of technical equipment etc. before class begins)
Gather resources, devise, write and produce new materials including authentic audio and visual resources as and when required
Complete all administrative tasks relating to your classes and your role in a timely manner and to a high standard, including detailed work and homework records, materials used, test results and other relevant student information
Leave sufficient detail for cover teachers in event of being unable to teach
Complete schemes of work/weekly plans in advance and amend to reflect changes in lesson content
Set, mark and correct homework providing appropriate written and oral feedback according to BSC's correction and feedback policy
Write up student tutorials, progress reports and final reports weekly or as and when required
Track student progress using BSC's online platform and upload all relevant digital work to student portfolios
Assist in placement testing and level assessment as directed by the CM
Attend student graduation ceremonies
Invigilate and participate in any exams held at the college as and when required
Support the student experience team as required when there are insufficient teaching hours available
Undertake other duties such as accompanying students on educational and cultural excursions and be part of the social activity rota as required and directed by college management
Continuous Professional Development
1) Actively participate in arrangements for future training and professional development as a teacher
2) Review teaching methods and work programmes through regular Professional Development Reviews/Appraisals with your manager, using BSC Systems to track all goals and CPD records
3) Participate in BSC's observation programme for both developmental and quality control purposes, including peer observations and others conducted by managers, teacher trainers, central academic team and other internal and external clients
4) Attend all team meetings and CPD sessions as required
5) Deliver seminars and workshops as part of the academic CPD programme
6) Be prepared to travel to other BSC locations to deliver and attend CPD sessions across the group
7) Keep up to date with industry developments, new resources, methods and technology and apply to your classroom practice where appropriate
8) Be willing to teach online lessons as and when required as part of development and to facilitate group-wide delivery of products
Communication and Collaboration
1) Cooperate with group, college and academic management as well as other teachers with regard to the preparation of courses, creation of materials, delivery of lessons and group-wide events and initiatives
2) Share and receive ideas for best practice across the group using Yammer, SharePoint and any other BSC communication channels
3) Actively use Yammer to promote and praise student and team achievements
4) Be familiar with the teacher and student handbooks and relevant updates
5) Proactively act as a conduit between students and college management team
6) Support and advise new or less experienced members of the teaching team
7) Respond to student feedback in a professional and timely manner, in conjunction with your manager
8) Take part in employee satisfaction surveys and other group driven initiatives
9) Communicate promptly any relevant student information to the Student Experience team or your manager
Safeguarding and Compliance
1) Oversee the general welfare of all students in your classes and refer any issues to the safeguarding officers in accordance with the group safeguarding policy
2) Undertake pastoral duties as necessary and support students on an individual basis through their academic journey
3) Manage student behaviour in the classroom and on college premises, and apply appropriate and effective measures in cases of misbehaviour in liaison with college management
4) Ensure that all students receive the necessary amount of time designated for tutorials
5) Report any maintenance issues to college management
6) Keep desk and common areas in a tidy and presentable fashion
7) Comply with all BSC policies and dress code
8) Ensure learners are aware of BSC rules and regulations
9) Conduct yourself in a manner representative of BSC's Vision, Mission and Values
You may be required in line with business needs to act as the Deputy to the Designated Safeguarding Lead. The role includes:
1. Receiving information about events that are planned in BSC Education that may involve young people or Adults and plans that indicate how safeguarding will be covered. BSC recognises that although our adult students are not considered as vulnerable adults within the terms of the Section 115(4) of the Police Act 1997 definition. As best practice to recognise all students' vulnerabilities due to cultural differences, being in unfamiliar territories, language barriers and isolation from support networks. and plans that indicate how safeguarding will be covered
2. Collecting information from any team members, contractors, volunteers, children, parents or carers who have any safeguarding concerns or safeguarding conduct concerns and conduct initial fact-finding investigation to gather information. The DDSL has a duty to properly record and report all concerning information
3. Assessing the information promptly and carefully, clarifying and obtaining more information about the matter as appropriate then record and refer findings to the DSL
4. Consulting initially with a statutory child safeguarding agency LADO to test out any doubts or uncertainty
5. Making a formal referral to any statutory child safeguarding agency, teaching membership provider, or the police if advised by LADO
6. Recording and reporting statements from any team member or student whereby inappropriate behaviour or allegations have been raised
7. Maintaining appropriate records of any welfare issues and passing on information to relevant parties (e.g. agents)
8. To assist the DSL with responsibility for safeguarding, including online safety and understanding the filtering and monitoring systems and processes in place
9. To assist the DSL with Prevent awareness within college teams and to make referrals where necessary
10. To attend team meetings, supervision sessions and management meetings as arranged.
11. Work flexibly as may be required and carry out any other reasonable duties especially in cases of emergency
12. Hold responsibility to make the DSL and People Team aware immediately of any concerns regarding team members, contractors or volunteers.
Education & Experience Required:
Cambridge DELTA or industry equivalent, or CELTA plus experience with willingness to work towards DELTA
Degree or alternative relevant experience
Ability to deliver lessons to TEFLQ standards
Experience in EFL teaching in the UK or abroad, with a good understanding of current industry developments
Evidence of competently using learning technologies in the classroom and online
Evidence of Continuous Professional Development and the willingness to learn new skills
Experience & Knowledge Desired:
Experience in leading CPD workshops or other training
Previous ACM or Senior Teacher experience
Knowledge of another language at B1 or higher
Experience in curriculum/syllabus design and/or materials writing
Expertise in another subject or industry such as business, technology, hospitality etc.
