Hours: 07:30 - 17:30, Monday to Friday, including Out of Hours On-Call Cover

We are seeking a Lead Transport Planner

to take a hands-on leadership role within our Projects Transport Team. The successful candidate will lead the daily operational planning of drivers, vehicles, and plant, ensuring that transport runs efficiently, compliantly, and in line with business and customer requirements.

You will be the direct operational lead for the Transport Planners, supporting and guiding the team day-to-day, while also deputising for the Transport Manager in their absence or when escalated matters arise. A strong communicator, quick problem solver, and confident planner, you will be instrumental in ensuring our department delivers consistent and effective service.

This is a key position requiring a proactive and flexible approach, excellent organisational skills, and the ability to make confident decisions in a fast-paced environment. Previous experience in a senior planning or logistics role is preferred.

Key Responsibilities - What will you be responsible for?



Operational Leadership & Team Management



- Lead the Transport Planning Team to ensure effective scheduling, communication, and task ownership.

- Act as the escalation point for operational issues both in and out of hours, alongside the Transport Manager on a bi-weekly Rota.

- Mentor, support and guide Transport Planners, ensuring consistent planning standards and professional development.

- Deputise for the Transport Manager during absence, including covering meetings, resolving escalations, and maintaining departmental continuity.

- Provide operational support to the wider Transport function, including Project Managers and Account Managers.

Planning and Co-ordination



- Plan and coordinate daily transport operations, ensuring jobs are delivered efficiently and compliantly.

- Schedule drivers, plant, and equipment using Job Watch, managing both scheduled and reactive work from internal teams and customers.

- Ensure maximum driver utilisation and cost-effective scheduling while maintaining high standards of service delivery.

- Liaise with drivers, site teams, and customers to ensure timely deliveries and service continuity.

- Monitor vehicle availability and ensure plans account for compliance, maintenance and servicing requirements.

- Cover the Transport Planner shift Rota during holidays, maternity/paternity leave, and long-term absence.

Compliance, Systems & Culture



- Support a strong safety culture in all planning activities and communications.

- Maintain accurate transport records, update scheduling systems (Job Watch), and ensure compliance with relevant transport legislation.

- Identify areas for improvement and assist the Transport Manager in reviewing and developing planning processes.

- Promote professional and courteous conduct within the team and during all customer or driver interaction.

Essential Skills & Attributes



- Proven experience in transport or operational planning (ideally in a senior or lead role).

- Strong planning and organisational capabilities.

- Ability to work under pressure, prioritise effectively, and resolve problems quickly.

- Excellent interpersonal skills, with a calm and confident approach to leadership.

- A sound working knowledge of transport legislation, vehicle routing and driver hour regulations.

- Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office and transport systems (e.g. Big Change).

- Full UK Driving License.

Desirable but non-essential for a candidate with the right attitude



- Background in utilities, drainage or construction logistics.

- Familiarity with working under framework or contract-based delivery models.

- Transport Manager's CPC qualification (or willingness to work towards it).

Additional Role Notes



- Participation in a bi-weekly out-of-hours escalation Rota is required, working alongside the Transport Manager.

- Operational On-call and Transport Planner shift cover is expected when planners are on annual leave or absent, the planners operate rotating shift patterns of 05:30 - 15:30 and 09:00 until 19:00, so please ensure you can accommodate this before applying.

- Role is subject to a three-month probationary period.
