The position of Uro-Oncology Cancer Nurse Specialist exists to meet the needs of cancer patients, ensuring they are placed at the centre of care delivery. Providing specialist nursing advice as clinical expert to support and facilitate high quality, individualised care to patients, relatives and carers with Urology cancer in collaboration with the multi professional team, in line with the local and national targets, where appropriate acting as a 'key worker'.


This post will lead and manage the nursing specialist service. This includes developing and co-ordinating the nursing service, incorporating expert clinical practice, leadership, audit and education. To be accountable for effective management of all resources needed to deliver comprehensive compassionate care within the team.




Main duties, tasks & skills required

The post holder will work as a key member of the Uro-Oncology team to improve care for those with suspected or confirmed Urology Cancer. The role will work across Trust directorates/NHS Trusts and primary care boundaries to aid continuity of care, thus offering a seamless service. They will attend the SFT Urology MDT once a week for multidisciplinary team meetings representing patients and refer patients to the specialist team for discussion, taking actions from the MDT meetings at SFT, Bristol & Royal Devon & Exeter.


Team working and communication is required on a daily basis to negotiate, motivate and challenge team workings to enable patients to proceed through the care pathways in a timely fashion meeting government targets. The post holder will utilise the skills of leadership, advanced clinical expertise, specialist education and management to support patients and the service to improve. The post holder will manage a team of Uro-Oncology clinical specialist nurses and a cancer support worker. They will work very closely with the cancer services team and the Urology MDT coordinator ensuring the tracking and safe management of patient's care.


The establishment and maintenance of both patient-user and professional relationships is vital to the role.


The requirement therefore is for a high level of mental and emotional effort on a daily basis.

The Uro-Oncology Lead Nurse Specialist will monitor the nursing elements of care pathways making recommendations for change in nursing practice to improve the quality of the service thereby ensuring that patients receive appropriate care and support.


To be responsible for their own service delivery and work closely with all members of the Uro-Oncology Multidisciplinary Team.


To be responsible for the management of a defined caseload from suspected diagnosis, throughout investigation and treatments and through palliative care and terminal illness.


To line manage specialist Band 6 nurses and cancer support worker in Urology.

Essential




Degree level education leading to Registration by the NMC

Desirable




Relevant Masters Degree in speciality

Teaching qualification or equivalent experience

Non-Medical prescribing course

Physical examination course

Communication or counselling course/certificate.

Minimum 5 years post registration experience.

Minimum 2 years at B6 grade experience in acute care

Proven leadership and management experience

Proven evidence of educational support to others

Experience of change management as part of leadership role

Evidence of research and audit participation and an understanding of the process involved

Experience of developing practice guidelines, protocols and pathways of care
