We are seeking an experienced and committed

Consultant Psychiatrist in Learning Disabilities

to join the multidisciplinary mental health and learning disability services across Wales.


The post-holder will be responsible for delivering high-quality care to patients within the designated geographical area, with flexibility to work across different community and inpatient sites as required. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to modern, forward-looking services undergoing significant development, with a focus on innovation and service improvement.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical




Provide a comprehensive psychiatric service for individuals with learning disabilities, including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness. Take continuing responsibility for the care and management of patients under your supervision, working closely with consultant colleagues, community teams, and allied health professionals. Contribute to the delivery of unscheduled care to ensure continuity of pathways. Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and case discussions, offering expert clinical input. Undertake domiciliary consultations and visits where clinically appropriate. Maintain Section 12(2) approval and Approved Clinician status. Comply with GMC guidelines on

Good Medical Practice

, confidentiality, and professional conduct. Take part in clinical governance activities, risk management, and quality improvement initiatives. Participate in annual appraisal, job planning, and revalidation, maintaining good standing for CPD with the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Education and Training




Act as an

Educational Supervisor

for junior medical staff and support their professional development. Participate actively in postgraduate teaching sessions and undergraduate training programmes. Provide bedside and clinical teaching, feedback, and assessment for medical students and trainees. Engage in educational activities at regional medical education centres and participate in relevant examinations if required. Encourage and facilitate multiprofessional learning opportunities within the service.

Research




Support and participate in research and development initiatives in line with the regional strategy. Critically appraise clinical evidence and contribute to improving outcomes through evidence-based practice. Opportunities are available to pursue personal or collaborative research projects, with time for this activity integrated into the job plan as agreed.

Management & Governance




Contribute to service planning, evaluation, and development at both local and regional levels. Take part in clinical audit and service reviews, implementing improvements where identified. Provide advice to colleagues and commissioners on service organisation and development. Support the recruitment, appraisal, and supervision of junior doctors and multidisciplinary colleagues where relevant.

Qualifications




#

Essential:




Complete GMC Registration with a licence to practice. Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent. On the GMC Specialist Register for Learning Disability Psychiatry, or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview. Valid Advanced Life Support certification.

Desirable:




Higher degree (MD, PhD, MSc, or equivalent). Additional clinical or management qualifications.

Clinical Experience




#

Essential:




Broad-based training and experience across psychiatry, with specific expertise in learning disability psychiatry. Competence in managing acute psychiatric presentations and complex comorbidities. Experience of working in multidisciplinary and multi-agency settings. Strong communication skills, including the ability to deliver complex or sensitive information.

Desirable:




Experience working within UK mental health services. Evidence of above-average performance and leadership potential. More exhaustive research or subspecialty experience.

Clinical Governance

Essential:




Evidence of participation in audit and understanding its role in service improvement. Knowledge of clinical governance principles.

Desirable:




Understanding of risk management processes. Familiarity with appraisal and annual job planning.

Research




#

Essential:




Knowledge of evidence-based practice and critical appraisal.

Desirable:




Track record of research activity with publications. Research degree or equivalent experience.

Teaching




#

Essential:




Experience in teaching medical students, trainees, and multidisciplinary staff. Willingness to take on educational supervision responsibilities.

Desirable:




Experience designing or leading structured teaching programmes. Training the Trainers accreditation.

Management




#

Essential:




Understanding of NHS structures and management principles. Willingness to contribute to clinical management.

Desirable:




Evidence of leadership roles or formal management training.

Ability to manage stressful situations and take responsibility for clinical decisions. Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills. Flexibility and adaptability to service needs. Commitment to high standards of clinical care and professional development.

Other Requirements




Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English to enable effective communication. * Ability to meet the travel and on-call requirements of the role.
