The Role: Part-Time Learning Support Assistant
We are seeking a motivated, empathetic, and enthusiastic Part-Time Learning Support Assistant (LSA) to join our team. The successful candidate will work closely with our qualified teachers to provide exceptional support to small groups of students (typically 4-6 students) within our specialized learning environment. This is a flexible post and hours will vary depending on demand so this role would be better suited to someone who is available in the mornings but may have another job/committment that they can work around.
This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about making a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable or disengaged young people and who is adept at building positive, trusting relationships.
Key Responsibilities
Direct Student Support:
Assist the lead teacher in the delivery of engaging and tailored English and Maths lessons, providing focused, one-on-one, or small-group support as directed.
Behavioral & Emotional Support:
Proactively manage student behavior using positive reinforcement and de-escalation strategies. Act as a stable, consistent, and nurturing presence to support students' emotional well-being and re-engagement.
Resource Preparation:
Assist in preparing and organizing learning resources, materials, and the learning environment to ensure lessons run smoothly and are accessible to all students.
Record Keeping:
Provide accurate and timely feedback to the lead teacher on student progress, behavior, and any concerns.
Teamwork:
Collaborate effectively with teachers and the wider Learning Room team to implement student support plans and contribute to a positive, therapeutic learning culture.
Safeguarding:
Adhere strictly to The Learning Room's safeguarding policies and procedures, ensuring the welfare and safety of all students at all times.
Essential Requirements
Experience:
Proven experience (paid or voluntary) working with children or young people, ideally in an educational, pastoral, or alternative provision setting.
Skills:
Strong literacy and numeracy skills, equivalent to GCSE Grade C/4 or above.
Attitude:
A resilient, patient, and flexible approach, with a genuine commitment to supporting students who may have complex needs (e.g., SEMH, SEND, or those who are temporarily out of mainstream education).
Communication:
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport quickly with students, staff, and parents/carers.
Commitment:
Full commitment to promoting equality, diversity, and the welfare of children.
Desirable Attributes
A relevant Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification.
Specific experience supporting students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs or moderate learning difficulties.
Familiarity with de-escalation techniques.
