The Anatomy of Contemporary Britain (
Level 5, 3 US credits
) is an interdisciplinary course delivered to
Study Abroad
students from the
US
. The module examines the cultural, political, and social realities of 21st-century Britain. It is split evenly between Britain's political and institutional structures, and its cultural production, representation, and identity.
Topics include migration and diaspora, class and regional identities, British humour and dialect, political devolution, media regulation, subcultures, the monarchy, British theatre, and LGBTQ+ Britain. Students engage with a wide range of cultural texts and media, from satire and spoken word poetry to political journalism and popular music. The course fosters comparative analysis, encouraging students to contrast British systems and norms with their own national contexts through discussion, cultural observation, and critical commentary.
Successful candidates must be experienced and effective teachers, able to cater to a diverse student body and engage students in the subject matter so that they are fully prepared for their academic and professional journeys. The candidate should be able to handle navigating controversial political and cultural topics with sensitivity and impartiality, encouraging students to conduct their own inquiry, and assisting them to approach topics evidentially, critically, evaluatively and comparatively. Teaching is delivered in weekly three-hour blocks.
